Split Lufthansa widebody order launches 777X
Lufthansa has ordered 34 Boeing 777-9X widebodies and 25 Airbus A350-900s to replace its A340 and 747-400 long-haul fleets.
The German flag carrier said in March that it would make a widebody order by the fourth quarter 2013 to replace its ageing long-range aircraft below the very large A380 and 747-8. Following negotiations with both manufacturers, Lufthansa’s supervisory board met on 18 September to approve the deal.
Now, the carrier has disclosed a split order for 34 777-9X aircraft – with Lufthansa thus becoming a launching customer for the next-generation 777 programme that is still awaiting official kick-off by Boeing – and 25 A350-900s.
While the 777X will be exclusively powered by General Electric GE9X engines, the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is the incumbent engine for the A350.
This is the first time that Lufthansa has ordered 777 passenger aircraft for its fleet. The carrier has thus far resisted the long-range twinjet in favour of the A340. But the 777 has made inroads with the airline as a freighter at cargo joint venture AeroLogic and, more recently, with orders for Lufthansa Cargo and group subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines.
Lufthansa operates 22 747-400s and 48 A340s, split evenly between the A340-300 and -600 variants.

great news! Does it also prove that B747-8 is a failure? Also, are the days 4-holers gone(except A380)?

Good news for LH - they certainly need the latest & most fuel efficient a/c to be competitive. Nothing better than the 777X and 350! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Not really, I doubt Boeing seriously contemplated pitching the 748i as an out and out, shoulder to shoulder competitor with the 380 - it was just a logical update of the 744ER with technology being scripted simultaneously on the 787 line.
It will just prolong the depletion of 747 fleets worldwide, and I'm sure the folks at Boeing realized as much prior to the release of the aircraft itself.
A legacy design from the 1960s will be hard pressed to compete with the far superior A380 from today even in the best of times. _________________ Yeah. |

Boeing designed the 748 primarily for the freight market. It is the only viable replacement for the older 747-200F and the 747-400F.
and half the world's air freight is shipped on 747s. So they ain't going nowhere. They will only get replaced by more 747s (748s)
IMO, The A380 is actually a flop show. There have been no new orders for the past one year, all the high technology notwthstanding. And it is never going to be a freighter. Those 268 odd is what Airbus is going to have to be satisfied with. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).
