BA just announced a surprise destination, Austin which is only about 150 miles from IAH. 787 is supposed to be used on long thin routes, and this is one of those. Can they reintroduce CCU - may be 4 times a week on a 787. The aircraft appears to be the right size, with minimal J and maximum Y.

Anything is possible, AUS was certainly out of the blue! A lot would depend though on industry growth in CCU and West Bengal, that would be the most sure shot way of getting direct flights to Europe.

Seems unlikely with the configuration of the 788 being quite premium heavy at nearly 35J and 25 y+,

but never say never,

AIs config however seems ideal for this route

For thinner routes, if you have a direct flight, people should ideally have to pay a premium.

If the yields continue to be lower, then this long thing route concept would be a difficult proposition.

Eg is PNQ-FRA flight of LH, where the fares are always higher than BOM / BLR/ DEL - FRA

An all economy class could be the option but will be commercially nonviable. Also BA has to compete with Emirates which could even further bring down the price. May be CCU out of reach of European airlines , let it go for ME airlines.
