Surprised there isn't a thread about this already.
The Pakistanis are fuming - they wanted Imran Khan up there, and were swayed by the massive turnouts at the 'jalsas', social popularity, etc. Unfortunately, villages are where elections are won or lost in our part of the world, and Sharif won it on the rural behest. Either that, or there was some massive rigging going on as the ECP reports suggest.
Rigging or not, how efficient was this election? You vote in the morning, spend the afternoon out, get back home and receive the results - nationwide - by dinnertime? It takes a lot longer down here, even in state elections. And all states are smaller, and have fewer people than in Pakistan. _________________ Yeah. |

I don't know if the elections were rigged, but it is hardly surprising that Imran Khan did not win. Crowd pullers are not necessarily vote pullers. Maybe the Pakistanis (justifiably) saw Nawaz Sharif as a more experienced and therefore a better leader. Sharif's PML would have also been a better bet to keep the bearded ones at bay, as they have more support for him and are willing to cut him more slack.
Anyway, let us wish Sharif luck. As long as he doesn't step on the toes of the Army (which he tended to do the last time around), I guess all will be well. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Punjab is the largest, richest, most influential and most populated area in PK, and thus it's also vote-rich. It's not surprising that Sharif won. Imran's popularity is really among his fellow Pathans and the urban middle class, and it's a testament to his electioneering skills that he managed to come in second.
But don't worry. The wheel will turn again, Sharif will be out in a few years, Mr. 10% Zardari will be back, and not much will change. |

It means nothing vis-a-vis India atleast. In fact, it is better to deal with the direct power aka Military dictators than deal with crooked politicians in the guise of 'democratically' elected governments. Have always caused us headaches in the past. |

Yeah, this seems to be a serious flaw with their so called 'democracy'. I mentioned that elections are won and lost in villages up top, well scratch that. In Pakistan, they're won and lost in Punjab - even if the candidate dominates in Lahore and its vicinity while being slayed everywhere else, he'll likely still end up as PM.
Another victim to the first past the post system. _________________ Yeah. |

I don't know about that, their armed forces are the ones who have given us headaches- they + ISI are the ones pumping money into jihadist groups the politicians are less likely to want conflict.
Something is better than nothing and if Sharif can push forward some peace initiative then it's better for India (assuming the Pakistan armed forces don't scuttle it .... )
As distrustful as we are about politicians... the Pakistan Army and their intelligence wing are the ones we trust the least We have to deal with it because they hold the real power but id assume the rest of the world doesn't trust them either .... _________________ eP007 |
