From: http://www.ndtv.com/article/assembly-polls/better-bangalore-night-life-bjp-promises-young-voters-362577
Quote: | Better Bangalore night life, BJP promises young voters
Bangalore: Karnataka's ruling BJP is wooing Bangalore's young voters with the promise of an extended night life in the state capital, if returned to power in the May 5 assembly poll.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had been opposing growing demands for longer night life in Bangalore, now says it will allow bars to serve liquor till midnight and eating joints to remain open till 1 a.m.
At present, closing time for both is 11.30 p.m.
|
This is the same bunch of jokers that have the Sri Rama Sene (famous for their Mangalore exploits saving the "dignity" of women) as their henchmen, and have been instrumental in keeping the 11:30 pm ban on in BLR for years now. Sudden change of heart or plain opportunism?
Disclaimer: there's really no party worth voting for in BLR, but I've done my civic duty today. PS: it was a mighty tough call on which one to vote for - the BJP and their idol worshiping dolts or the Congis and their money grabbing idiots. The neanderthal JD(S) did not figure in my choices. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Isn't it tragic that when it comes to what really matters - ie the economy and everything else associated with it - there's so little wiggle room, that we're going to have to deal with the same rot, regardless of which party comes to power.
So one ends up, tragically, voting on other factors. For me personally, a financial goonda is less of an evil than a religious goonda. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

I beg to differ.
Financial goondas, like the 'Government' in power right now, can do, and are doing infinitely more damage. Thanks to the bloody corrupt Congress and their style of crony capitalism, our economy is in the toilet and the government sponsored looters are making merry, showing a middle finger to the taxpayer. Every sector of the economy, whether it is Agriculture, Defence or industry, is being compromised solely to line pockets. Even the country's international reputation is taking a beating.
On the other hand, in a pluralistic like India there is only a certain amount of damage a religious goonda can do. I like to believe that a vast majority of the Indian population is basically tolerant and this will ensure that any Gita or Quran hugging bigot in power can only go up to a certain extent.
So if offered a choice in India, it will be the religious bigot for me. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Well the religious brigade also tend to be more inclined to tell us how to live our lives and to impose their tartuffian morals on others. So no thanks. Besides, it's not like the religious brigade are free of greed either.
I'd wager we would have been in a very similar situation economically even if it had been the mandirwallahs calling the shots in Dilly for the last few years. Only we'd have the daily tension and religious drama and sermonising and hatemongering and all that nonsense to deal with on top of the corruption and financial malaise.
We each have our own ranking of what constitutes a greater menace. For me, the religious types will almost always rank as the worst. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

The mandirwallahs have been in power earlier, and their corruption was nowhere near what the 'secular' jokers now are indulging in.
Besides, apart from certain pockets, there can never be a religious bigot government with an absolute majority in India. No way we can ever become a Hindu version of Pakistan or Iran, IMO. The fact that the Rama Sene Pub bashing and the Shiv Sena's Valentine day bans have had little or no effect overall only attest to that.
So no, out with the looters. ANYONE is better than them. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Interesting thread above ^^.
The INC is definitely miles higher than the BJP (at the national level) on issues such as corruption and financial mayhem. However the BJP at the state level in Karnataka was probably worse than the local INC in terms of corruption. They bought their way into a nice govt. (which was still OK), and then squandered the rest of their term visiting temples (to donate money), iron mines (to get money), and girlfriends (to spend money). Infrastructure? Industry? Farmers? Water? Garbage? - what's all that for?
The worst when it comes to corruption are probably the regional parties like BMW's BSP in UP, the sleeping jokers at the JD(S) in Karnataka, the monsters at INLD in Haryana etc. They probably put Madam and co to shame.
I wish we could elect ourselves a strong and financially clean leader. Every leader worth his/her salt has a religious black mark against them -whether it's BJP's NaMo with Godhra, or INC's Sikh-butchering-history. So then it's left to who's less corrupt and more capable to bring real improvements to this country.
In the regional situation in Karnataka, even that decision is very tough unfortunately. There's only apathy, corruption and jingoism that's to be found here.
The exit polls predict the Congi's getting a majority in Karnataka. There goes my hope for extended night life _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Same here.

That's where I disagree- we are anything but a tolerant society. Not as bad as the Pakistans/Irans but all it takes is a push at the national level and we step back 50 years ....
But anyway coming to the issue of corruption - the Congress seem to be a class apart at the national level, but in Karnakata the BJP + Yeddy =
Nightlife ..... an election wont change that. _________________ eP007 |

So it looks like the lesser evil is going to wallop the greatest evil.

They barely managed five years and just because the details haven't emerged doesn't necessarily mean they're honest as the day is long.
If my state is any indication, they're just as bad. In one term they completely looted the richest state in the union and turned Bombay into Mumbai (metaphorically speaking).
Corruption can yet be controlled, or, at least, managed. But it's a near impossible task to stem the tide of hate, especially when it is being constantly refuelled by the establishment in power.
Of all the things our country (supposedly) stands for, secularism is the most important to me. In fact, I think we're not secular enough.

Unfortunately, i's probably going to be a while before we get what we desperately need : a single party with a convincing majority at the hustings. We're akin to Europe in many ways, with nearly each constituent member interested primarily in it's own interests. And, given how both unions were formed, it's not an entirely surprising scenario.
That said, I have become much more pragmatic over the years. Let's face it, we're not Denmark. Our politicians don't enter politics for selfless reasons and solely for the good of others. Therefore, I have no problem with people making money, so long as the roads get built and children get educated and people get medicated. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

^^ Correction - they've already won - having won more than 50% of the seats already - and the rest are icing on the cake...
Good for the congress - and definitely goes to show the BJP that winning one election does not mean you've "reached" and can then spend the next 5 years doing absolutely nothing.
I'm happiest that the KJP (with Yeddy at the helm) and JDS (with Deve Gowda and sons) have been completely marginalized and will spend another 5 years in the wilderness.
And I pray that the Congress does not behave like the BJP did - with infighting, corruption, lack of development etc. If they do, the voters will shoo them out the next time around. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Yah. That was a bloodbath.
And with an absolute majority, they won't have too many excuses for not getting things done (not that that will stop them!). _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

Well - knowing the INC - the only things that will get done are corruption, more corruption and even more corruption .
Hopefully somewhere in that agenda is a flying f### for the residents of Karnataka. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I think what's really tragic is that Indians at the national level are stuck between crooks of the highest order who are into dynastic rubbish, and crooks of the highest order who are one saffron chaddi away from glorifying the likes of sati. Even more tragic is that this makes the execrable Narendra Modi a viable choice.
Btw, I've seen his roads, etc. He's being glorified for doing what any governing official ought to be doing. It's not like he's going above and beyond the call of duty, but then compared to the rot in power in the rest of the nation, that may be a mighty achievement indeed! |

It remains to be seen if he is a viable choice, or if he simply thinks he is. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

Amazing things I learnt about our new CM - suddenly I'm willing to give him a chance!
1. Atheist
2. Non-superstitious - does not even know his DoB and does not believe in Astrology/ numerology and all that jazz
3. A wizard with numbers - widely respected for having a deep understanding of the budget/ financial situation.
Wow - who would have thought this possible in Karnataka? Awesome... _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I had the exact same reaction when I first read it. Hopefully, he'll be a nice changes from the dunces earlier who decided to spend lakhs to pray for rain during droughts in much of the state, instead of taking some action. |
