|
|
Last night, I got a phone call. Bloke at the other end chimed out after I'd said Hello, "May I speak to Mr. Kumar?" When I tell him that he's got the wrong number, he replies, "Oh. Which number did I dial?"
So I tell him my number. Too late, all that was just a ploy to get his foot through the door and he begins with his fake sales pitch. "I work for Windows" (Note he says Windows, not Microsoft) "and have detected spyware in your computer. Run the following commands and tell us what you see".
I pretended to follow his instructions through - which resulted in the "presence of some corrupted files" and he urged me to purchase software to "sort out the problem" from him pronto.
My email inbox is flooded with these too. I got one from service@paypalf.com the other day (note the "f"!) saying that the email associated with my account had been changed and that I needed to login and confirm the change. I did notice the f, but besides, they'd left the subject field as "Supprort paypal". Retards.
I think their targets are non-tech savvy folks; old people will likely fall for these things and end up scuppering some cash.
Isn't there a Do not Dial/Disturb registry where I can put in my number? _________________ Yeah. |

awww that should have rung a bell right there. How can he ask you what number he has dialled, when he is the one who has dialed it?
You could mark all those emails you are getting as spam, so that they will get sent to your spam folder and deleted eventually.
Any way you can call your phone provider and ask them to trace and block that number? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Yeah, sounds silly in hindsight but at the time when dealing with a fluent conversation across a telephone line it doesn't strike you as particularly odd. For a first time anyway. _________________ Yeah. |

For those in India, running Android phone, and wanting to get back at these telemarketers sending SPAM SMSes, I can't recommend this app highly enough:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deepakj.smspam
One click to send a free report to your telecom provider. Once you do that, the TRAI mandated machinery kicks in. Your telcos is forced to raise a ticket for the complaint. Then assign manpower to track down the spammer. Then check if the spammer is following the DND list or violating it. Then issue them a warning/ notice/ diconnection. Then call you back and let you know what the action taken was.
Now - this will not discourage the spammers, after all a new SIM is a couple of rupees. But this will encourage telcos from not allowing such activities on their network, the cost of closing these tickets is much larger than the revenue they get from these spamming SIMs.
Definitely do use this app and complain away about spammers. Get them thrown out of the network! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
