http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Mumbai/Mumbai-among-world-s-dirtiest-cities-Survey/Article1-972783.aspx

Of 40 major "tourist hotspots," Mumbai was found to be the dirtiest. Surprise, surprise.

Predictably, Singapore and Toky were the cleanest.

This survey does have its flaws.

First, Mumbai is not a tourist hotspot. The survey should have featured Delhi, but then I doubt if Delhi would have fared much better in that list of 40 cities.

Why, was Kolkata excluded from the poll? Mumbai is supposedly clean, by comparison.

That is only one side of the story. Many of the world's cities like New York, Tokyo, London and Amsterdam to name a few, are highly overcrowded and are accommodating many more than what they were designed to hold. None of them are anywhere near as dirty as Indian cities. Why do you think this is so?

I think the problem lies in the near complete absence of civic sense amongst many Indians, coupled with the inefficiency and apathy of the municipal staff in most Indian cities..

Tokyo has the largest population density with Mumbai a rather distant second, yet the difference between the two, is night and day.

I suppose the only way you can help this country is by fleeing. It's a win-win situation for both parties - those staying, and those deciding to set up shop elsewhere.

I disagree-- we have this situation because we Indians don't give a damn about our surroundings and have less civic sense than dung beetles.
We spit on the streets, throw wrappers and banana peels out car windows and dump our garbage in front of the neighbors house. It's not the low income groups who do this, even the wealthy. Has nothing to do with population.

Mumbai and Calcutta are the filthiest of the big cities IMO, that's not saying much the others are not far behind.
