The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 - 100, where 0 means that a country is perceived as highly corrupt and 100 means it is perceived as very clean.
Of the BRIC countries, only Russia is more corrupt than India. I guess the Mayawatis of the world need to get their A game going and beat Russia.

More importantly from looking at the map and the list, India is "as corrupt" as some other countries in our ballpark - China, Brazil, Mexico and Italy, to name a few. _________________ Yeah. |

I've not read the report, but I'm surprised that India does not top the list. The level of corruption in India is truly unbelievable, and I find it tough to imagine that there are other countries at our level (or even more corruption)... _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

You will be surprised to know that some countries which we perceive to be more honest, are corrupt too. I was browsing through Facebook just before I saw this thread and here is what I got there:

Of course I didn't read the whole article as you need a login, but I guess you'll get the drift just by reading the headline.
In India there is at least some sort of administration, law & governance in place. There are countries where even such basic things don't exist.
Most of the Asian, African and Latin American countries are either orange or red. Only Western Europe, North America & Australia are yellow! I could count only 15-18 countries that are yellow!
So, one can take solace in the fact is that we are not alone.
Whether we should be happy about it - of course not! _________________ Boeing makes planes. Airbus makes videogames! |

While I agree with the general sentiment that there are countries more corrupt than India, I think that map hides the real picture.
While compiling that map TI seems to have looked only at big government corruption and not the entire public sector corrution as they claim. It is the only explanation I can give for putting Berlusconi's Italy or Brazil nearly on par with India. If you look at the trickle down effect of corruption that reaches the common man, even when dealing with government officials, India is a lot worse than what that map suggests. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

This is nothing of a surprise...It is a known fact. The sad part is our political and intellectual thugs still continue to boast about India's growth story while the filth is still visible.....
Deeply saddened and angered to be called an Indian in these circumstances..... _________________ www.flickr.com/G-BYGB photos |
