The General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to upgrade Palestine to a non-member observer state (basically the same as the Vatican).

As expected Israel and their American fanboys, as well as the American fanboys of Canada and assorted micro-states voted against.

Britain showed a flash of spine by abstaining (yes, I know, it's sad when fence-sitting is seen as having a spine).

Most of the world - 138 countries - voted for.

It's a small and so far largely symbolic gesture. But, I think, a good one.

O it will still be celebrated.

Except maybe light a few Palestinians instead of candles. A life-size Menorah.

It's about time.

The US (regardless of who's in power) has been pretzel'd into a position of blanket support of Israel because the Israelis have played both sides of the aisle (Dems and Republicans) expertly, and, frankly, most Americans are too dumb to know anything outside the boundaries of their own hometowns.

That being said, in the Israeli-Palestinian showdown, it's really down to a fight between douches and douchebags.

That's true. This time around, Abbas is at least pretending, whilst Bibi's launched a new mission to get closer to wiping Palestine off the face of the earth settlememt by settlement (although, one could argue, Israel and Palestine are really the same place).

If only people can stop dwelling in the past by digging up things that may or may not have happened thousands of years ago as the basis for making decisions today, all the while conveniently ignoring everything that happened in between. It's akin to the retarded mandir-masjid nonsense.

Besides giving a bunch of Americans collective apoplexy, what's the worse that would happen if a second-term president were to tell Bibi to suck it?

As long as the Palestinians remain associated with terrorists like Hizballah, Hamas, Al Qaeda and other associated thugs, they neither deserve legitimacy nor a hallowed place at the UN.

My disagreement with that opinion aside, have you been drinking something American?

What on earth is the connection between Osama's crazies and Hamas? And whilst certainly linked - they are neighbours with a common enemy - Hezbollah is a Lebanese organisation, not Palestinian.

Further, the Abbas and the PLO are poles apart from Hamas. They lord over completely separate pieces of land and have different agendas and methods. One heads the West Bank and the other claims to be President of Gaza. They may as well be two separate entities in many ways.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Egyptian Islamic Brotherhood whose links to Al Qaeda are well known.
Hezbollah is a Lebanese organization but since the 1980s South Lebanon , they have been well involved with terrorism and training Palestinian militants.

Abbas can do nothing to stop members of his organization from dealing with the 'Death to Israel and America' nutcases who, amongst other things, want a fundamentalist Islamic government all over the World. These links go back to the time of Yasser Arafat, who was dealing with these thugs big time, and now all of them want their pound of flesh.

The PLO and its moderates like Abbas have to clean their act before they can be given any legitimacy. Legitimize the Palestinians at this stage, and you may as well legitimize Pakistan's claim to Kashmir and the Hizb-ul-Mujaheddin and other Koran addled yahoos along with it.

I have no qualms with someone asking for an independent piece of territory, but taking the help of terrorists to try and achieve that is definitely wrong.

It is OK to get this recognition from United Nation, but it comes with a price tag. Palestinians must shy away from violence and suicide attack. Otherwise their voice will not be heard and they will remain marginalized. No hope for tomorrow.

It was provocative move on the part of Israel to build 3000 new homes near Jerusalem just a day after the UN passed this declaration.

This move has strengthened Abbas's status amongst Palestinians. It is important for the world community to back this regime so that Hamas can be put under pressure to stop violence and recognize Israel.

All this while, Abbas was silent on this issue and Isreal were ignorant about proceeding with the dialogue to work on a 2-state solution. As a result everybody thought he was not influential enough to make policies for Palestinians.

Lets not forget however justifiable it maybe for Isreal to attack in self-defence against Hamas, it is important to know that for every 1 Israeli being killed there are more than 100s of Palestinians killed. It is prevelant in Gaza. This was the same case in the recent battle in Gaza.
