India capable of making missiles with 8,000 km range:
Saraswat
Bangalore, May 23 2012, (PTI):
India is capable of developing missiles that can hit targets located at more than 8,000 km away, a top official today said.
"We will develop it as and when we see a need to develop a missile longer in range than Agni-V. We have the capability to do it," Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister V K Saraswat told reporters here.
Since DRDO had already crossed the 'threshold' of making a system with longer capability and developing its sub- systems, making a longer version of Agni-V would be easier, Saraswat, also the Director General of Defence Research Organisation, said.
Last month, India test-fired nuclear-capable Agni-V Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile that brought China within its reach with a strike range of over 5000 km.
Saraswat said Agni-V can double up as a satellite launcher for hurling small-sized spacecraft into the space.
Agni-V had major propulsion blocks and a kind of aviation technology which makes it a suitable launch vehicle for sending small satellites into space, he added.
DRDO had started work on it, he said but refused to give a timeframe.

Aseem,
Thanks for the illustration. But Kolkata is not a major missile base for Indian strategic forces. I don’t think in near future it will at all be an ICBM launch center. Rather a small town outside Siliguri could be a major base for IRBM as you could cover Tibbet and south China from that point. But anyway thanks again.

point taken! wish a small town outside Siliguri had an airport, which also had a code. And I could use that code on Great Circle Mapper. Unfortunately not

A wasteful effort, IMO, considering the fact that all our enemies are within 2000 kms of our borders.
Who are we planning to strike with this misslile, Europe, Russia, Japan ????
Isn't it better if we invest more money on improving intelligence gathering, better equipment for our police forces and anti-terror operations than on this? I mean, there's not much point having an 8000KM range missile in your arsenal when you have gangs of street urchins entering your borders with impunity and creating mayhem in your economic capital, is there? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Although an 8000km missile is not on the cards right now, a 5000km missile will help India place its missile bases far away from the Chinese border - maybe on remote islands, and still hit almost all Chinese cities.
The target may only be 2000km away from the Indian border, you will not place all your missiles at the border. The higher range allows for a greater dispersion of missile bases throughout your territory - to allow for an effective second strike capability. _________________ Boeing makes planes. The small town I am indicating is Dalkhola near Siliguri. It has no airport but flanked by two IAF bases, Purnea air base and Siliguri( Bagdogra ) airbase both within 40 miles. Desi IRBM launched from here could hit Lassa and Golmund ( major Chinese IRBM site in central Asia ), even one could target KunMing. And you don’t have to take nuclear missiles to restive north eastern India through the chicken neck corridor. These issues have been discussed in the past in foreign affairs related journals.
As for 8000 miles range ICBM; I think it is just a technology demonstrator. India has declared in the past that it has no enemy in Europe or America. So targeting that part of the world is out of question. But you never know---never say never in politics and diplomacy. _________________ Sabya99 |

The past is no indicator for the future. While we don't have any enemies in Europe right now, we very well could in the future. And then this missile would show its utility.
Once we find out we have a European enemy is not the time to start developing a missile to take them out - this process takes years. _________________ Editor of AeroBlogger |

We are never going to have any real enemy beyond China and Pakistan. Even the Pakis are now talking trade and peace. Go figure!

Developing a weapon to deal with an imaginary enemy who may never exist is the Pakistani ISI's way of thinking! Since when did they become our role models? How about we deal with the real problems first?
This missile is a waste of resources. Period! _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Hear hear. There is absolutely no need to continue spending obscene amounts of money that we don't have for something that is basically available off the shelf.
Even if this nonsense program is successful, we will have some weapon that we will almost certainly never use. On the other hand, we still won't have housing, toilets, literacy, roads, electricity, drinking water, education, food or basic healthcare. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |
