My flight arrived 28 hours late
TODAY's Peter Greenberg says mismanagement played a role
Quote:
Consider Delta Airlines Flight 16 on April 1.
Flight 16 is the longest long-haul flight in the Delta schedule, officially listed at 14 hours nonstop, but because of wind conditions, often longer. It goes between New York and Mumbai, India. It's a Boeing 777 that starts in Atlanta as a shuttle flight to New York's JFK, and then continues on the 7,056-mile nonstop to India.
This is a story of mismanagement, stupid and unnecessary decisions, delays, cancellations (not one, but two), anger, frustration and expense. |

Interesting reading for "airline bashers".
But some points to consider.
1 Cleaning not done on time - Most likely the aircraft assigned for the flight (and being a long hauler- there wont be I guess too many of them) would have arrived late from the previous flight
2, 5 Rows in Coach - IFE not working - "Just 5 rows" seems trivial - but it is 5 rows and how many seats - Anything from 35 to 40 seats - so literally 20-25% of total pax.
25 % of the pax without an IFE for a 16 hour flight - sounds to me a valid reason to try to fix the problem - MEL or not.
Picture changes???
Also dont forget this not a one hour BOM Nagpur flight - this is a 16 hour flight - and if an attempt is not made to fix, most likely the same glitch should have been carried over to the return flight as well (BOM is not a main DL base - and the turnaround time there is limited anyway).
"75 th in the line - from the ONE JFK runaway"? What happened to the other runways?? Obviously closed for some reason - most likely weather ....there was some bad weather going around at that time......
Picture changes?????
"Poor staffing - 3 staff to deal with" - what else do you expect at the end of a long day on some of the last flights of the day - roster people back everyday to work for three extra hours on the off chance that some aircraft will go tech every day???
As I said - good story for airline bashers - but in reality , none of the decisions sound as silly as it was made to be.
No, I dont work for DL, but put it this way, some of thse so called wrong decisions even for an outsider like me makes a lot of sense . |

For that cost, the airline could have presented 5 rows of volunteers with one-way airfare equivalent as a refund and got along with the flight. Maybe could also have given them portable VCDs.
But then, authorising that sort of a purchase would take forever, I guess.
Myths on European and American airlines and their efficiencies . . . |

I see what you mean; it is a huge inconvenience to some people to not have the IFE work (happened to me). However im pretty sure the airline doesn’t have to reimburse you. A free one way air voucher??? I was thinking more along the lines of a $30 duty free credit. It happens everyday, IEFs don’t work. The airlines don’t hand out free tickets for such things. If they are an image conscious airline they will do something to appease the pax, but I don’t think they have to. _________________ eP007 |
