In a move that could raise the bar for broadband services in the country, Bharti Airtel is launching a 4 Mbps wire line connection for just Rs 899 a month starting Friday.
The company has also decided to make its existing broadband connections 50 per cent cheaper by doubling the speeds being offered to subscribers, without any additional cost.
Upgradation
Therefore, all of Bharti's existing subscribers on 256 Kbps connection will automatically get upgraded to 512 Kbps speed at no extra charge by the end of June.
Those who are currently on 512 kbps will start getting 1 Mbps; and 1Mbps subscribers will get speeds of 2Mbps.
Speaking to Business Line Mr. K. Srinivas, Joint President-Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel, “We are massifying the broadband experience by enabling users to access higher speeds at affordable rates. Our data shows that more and more customers want higher speeds. Average usage per customer has also increased by 40 per cent.
“Therefore, we are redefining broadband speeds in India by upgrading all our subscribers to 512 Kbps even as the telecom regulator defines broadband as 256 Kbps.”
The 4Mbps connection to be launched by Airtel is also 30-40 per cent cheaper compared with current market rates. With a 4Mbps connection users can download a 1 GB movie in 34 minutes compared with 9 hours taken in case of 256 Kbps speed.

Is this true? I'd need to check at home and confirm. I have a 512Kbps/day and 1Mbps/night connection - I hope that goes to 1Mbps/day and 2Mbps/night _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

When on earth are they going to bring in ADSL 2+? When the world is running at over 30mbps connections why is India languishing at such low speeds. Surely cost is not an issue. The offices seem to have fast connection. What is stopping them from extending these to homes? _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

30Mbps bandwidth should be offered for those who want it, but most people are not going to pony up for that offering. It would be interesting to find out how many folks have the unlimited 2Mbps package from Airtel (I think it's INR 2222 pm) - I don't know of anyone here who does (besides maybe Kabir).
Besides - not all parts of the world have 30Mbps. And in India, there's no such thing as "unlimited" traffic, what with Fair Usage Policies (FUP) applying after you cross a couple of GB data transfer (I think mine is after 30 or 40 GB). Hence beyond a point having a ultra fast connection does not help too much as you'd theoretically finish your monthly quota in a couple of hours. Take the example above - 4 Mbps, but with a 6GB limit beyond which your bill starts ballooning. I haven't done the maths, but I bet with torrents on, you can easily reach the 6 GB limit in a few hours.
Out of interest - how much are customers charged for 30Mbps speeds in the rest of the world? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I think this would be a good news if true. I have an unlimited 512kbps connection at home. I need to check if they have changed it to 1mb. On the other hand, does airtel or any other service providers have the 30 mbps option? _________________ HamiltonAir |

In Australia 30mbps+ was around AUD $60 a month.
And i do have Airtel's 2mbps unlimited package, mainly because alongside my day job I am also an avid sound producer and musician so I have to heavily update softwares regularly. |

Wow, and I complain about 10Mbps.
30Mbps is rather uncommon in the US but the US is known for slow internet speeds because the providers are too cheap to upgrade their infrastructure. They JUST started offering 20Mbps in my town but we have a smaller provider here. Across town Time Warner has been at 20Mbps or higher for a while now.
Prices are outrageous too, my 10Mbps costs $75/month. The standard which is 6Mbps or something less is $40/month. Lets not even get into upload speeds. At least it's all unlimited. |

Wow, at my school as well as at home the internet speed is usually around 54mbps.
The problem in the US is that many municipalities allow monopolies in ISPs. Only recently when my city opened up competition did we start getting fiber optic internet and 54mbps speeds. _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

I did enquire about that, but they said theres no such offer from airtel. I was offered the 4mbps plan, looks like a good deal. _________________ HamiltonAir |

Louis - FUP is not an 'offer' from Airtel - it's their fair use policy where if you use over say 40GB in a month, your speed will half for the rest of the month.
I called Airtel to understand when my home connection is going to be bumped up, I was told that I have to wait for the "backend team" to contact me for the doubling offer. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I was looking at an Airtel connection today. For the plan mentioned by Louis (1399, 4 MBps), the limit is 25 GB, after which the speed will be reduced to 256kbps.
For the 1099, 4MBps plan, the max is 12GB, after which the speed reduces to 256kbps.
I have their plan sheet lying around somewhere. Let me see if I can scan it and post it. _________________ My Flickr photos

Ooops! Sorry Nimish, I got confused with their automatic upgrade offer. As for the FUP, the limit is 25GB for a month and it gets reduced to 256kbps if I cross that limit. _________________ HamiltonAir |

This is all marketing hogwash! I spoke to Airtel yesterday and they said they have no offer of upgrading my 1Mbps connection to 2Mbps.
I pay 1799 plus tax a month for unlimited use. This translates into first 100GB a month at 1Mbps after which their Fair Use Policy kicks in and my speed will go down to 512Kbps! |

Sounds like that. When I spoke with them they said the "backend" is doing the rounds of calling customers and offering to upgrade them. It hasn't happened yet! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

You do realize that the word "Unlimited" has no meaning here with Airtel - 20-30 GB and you're past their "Fair Usage Policy" limits and will be back to 256KB. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

4 mbps would be great. My network in India is plagued by dropped service and ultra slow connections even though I have broadband.
In the US as others mentioned, many cities have monopolies, and in this area, the cable modem only gets speeds up to 11 mbps due to congestion. |

That's excellent news - maybe even I'll have my plan upgraded after I get back to BLR in mid-May _________________ We miss you Nalini! |
