Air Arabia launches low-fare flight to Ahmedabad

MUSCAT — The Sharjah-based Air Arabia airline yesterday commenced its services to the Indian city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

The inaugural flight took off from Sharjah at 1.30pm to land in Ahmedabad at 5:55pm and left Ahmedabad at 6:40pm to arrive in Sharjah at 7.55pm.

Ahmedabad-bound travellers from Muscat left for Sharjah at 10:35am from where they were to continue onward journey to Ahmedabad.

One-way fares to Ahmedabad and Mumbai from Muscat will start at RO32 exclusive of taxes and surcharges and similar fares are available on return trips.

Oman Air will add two new destinations in India when it starts flight to Lucknow and Jaipur from May 1 and June 1 respectively, says a UNI report.
Ziyad bin Karim Al Haremi, Oman Air CEO said he was not ‘‘worried’’ about the emergence of low-cost carriers on the Oman-India sector offering cheap fares. ‘‘They have created a different segment. They don’t affect us,’’ he said.
Al Haremi said ‘‘Oman Air was planning to purchase a number of planes including Airbus 200/330, of which some would begin to operate in 2009.’’ Procedures were going on to appoint a consultant to conduct a feasibility study on the issue, he added. Some of these will be used for long haul flights to places in Europe, Far East. Haremi said the move to re-brand the airline’s image was especially aimed at bringing in more holidaymakers to the country as part of the government’s push to promote tourism, ends the UNI report.

Looks like the India-Gulf sector is hotting up with increasing competition. Maybe this will force prices down from the artificially pegged levels that they are now. During high season it is sometimes more costly to fly Gulf-S India than to LHR/CDG/FRA.
