I don't think they really need it - given the move to more P2P services and the lack of a semi-decent hub to feed into any VLA a/c. And besides LHR, they don't really operate into any airport that highly slot restricted (unless you count the slot restrictions at BOM and DEL as being the reasons Very Happy)

Personally I dont think so.
AI with the B772LR & B773ERs + the B787/B748i should cater for many years.

I personally think that AI might consider the 748I over the A380, just my two cents Wink

There are reasons to that:
AI and Boeing have better relations.
Commonality as AI already operates the 747s

i would definately see Air Indian ordering A380 simply because the babu's will think that its a matter of pride for a airline to own the worlds largest airliner. But the order might be next year .also to consider is that SQ will start flying it later this year and popularity will increase. Also when since KF is getiing it PP will definately want to AI to be left out

What would be a practical timeframe for merged AI to go 100% privitased.
Would 2 yrs be adequate.

Under normal circumstances a 2 year time frame should be more than adequate, but under babu type circumstances who knows how long the whole integration will take.

Back to the topic,

I dont think AI [not AIX just AI] will need any more aircrafts and i am not just saying this out of the cabinet procedure but out of practicality.

15 77Ws effectively replace the current 12 744s and leave 3 for expansion.

27 787-800s effectively replace their 19 odd A310s and 2 743 Combis and 4 772s, providing for about 10-12 for expansion [considering that some of the routes of 310 have been taken over by AIX]

6 737-800s of the AIX order are expected to be configured in dual class to cater markets where there is need for a premium demand but not as much demand as to utilise a Widebody on that route.

8 77LRS f..k knows what the hell the seat issue is but i was hoping they would be flying by now, but any which ways these 8 add for total expansion.

So this gives AI about 22 aircrafts for expansion which i feel is massive.

But however if it ever does come to the question of the VLA, for whatever reason,
altough i like the A380 and would love to see it in AI/IC colours , but i feel the 748 Intercontinental will be a better fit for AI.

--It offers just the right upgrade of seats from their 77Ws
--It has commanility with the 777W cockpit and they have a trained pilot pool of 744 operators.
--GE which AI signed a multi million dollar deal for its 68 aircrafts provides the exclusive engines for the Intercontinental and also shares the same engines as that of the 788s.

However there were talks about a consultant company looking to purchase about 30 more widebodies for the AI/IC entity, however i do beleive they will shortlist in the 787-9/10 or 350-WXB-900 category.
