Times of India 27/3/07 reports that the following airlines will either launch new services or expand services to Kolkata (CCU) shortly :

QR,AIX,LH,GMG .

The report further says that QR is scouting for ofice space in the city which makes its launch imminent. QR will launch a daily service between Doha and Kolkata.

Air India Express will announce its launch from Kolkata very shortly. The possible routes are CCU-BKK-HKG (much needed direct service to HKG), CCU-BKK-SIN and CCU-BKK-KUL.

LH which currently operates a three times a week FRA-CCU service has informed the CM that it plans on expanding this service to a daily one soon.

GMG airlines will double its flights from the city to DAC and add a flight every week to Chittagong.

IC has only recently doubled its services from Kolkata to Kathmandu.

Good times ahead ...

The latest ASA between India and Qatar is pretty confusing in that it does not list CCU in the Capacity Entitlements section, but it's listed later in Schedule 2. Interestingly QR is allowed a DOH-BOM-CCU service (of course without rights on BOM-CCU). I don't know the pace at which QR are getting new a/c, but they currently seem capacity constrained, so I'm not sure they can launch CCU until they have new a/c join them.

Is AIX making BKK a hub? Why are all these flights routing via BKK? Surely there's potential for a CCU-SIN or CCU-HKG non-stop?

Congrats to CCU on getting the much needed international operations of LH QR and AIX with regards to AIX,

Even i do not understand the reason why they want to operate via BKK maybe making it a scissors hub when they perhaps later launch services from BOM/DEL/BLR/HYD to BKK and offer the connections to the KUL/HKG/SIN,

But in a way they also compete in an oversaturated SE Asian market.

But from an operations prosective they would only have to dedicate 3 737-800s for all 8 city pairs

after long time reading in your forum, i would like to write here also something. so hi to everybody!
i would love to see more int. flights to ccu. i'm flying to india every year, and specially to kolkata because i love this city, and well my mother also lives there. its always very complicated finding a flight from europe to ccu. i can remember flying with aeroflot, stopped, klm, stopped, royal jordanien, stopped, and british airways which is now the only possibility, because lh is just to expensive for me. pricedifference LH-BA 400 euros, which is a lot of money. Last time i was in kolkata february and march with ba from vienna via london, and the inbound and outbound flight of ccu was totally crowded, also the business class. i was told that the problem for airlines flying to ccu is, that ccu isn't a high yield flight, thats why i was surprised. QR would be a very good alternative to BA because it would avoid, flying round the corner, so only in one direction.
i once read here that also AZ wants to launch flights to ccu.is this right?
wouldn't it be a problem with to many airlines departing from ccu international at the same time, as it is very small?
well i'm just looking forward coming again to ccu, hopefully very soon, best city of india.probally summer, or next winter.
bye willy

Suggest that you try either of the following the next time incase QR doesnt start up by then :

Emirates via DXB
Gulf Air via BAH or MCT
Air India via London Heathrow

emirates is nice, but with a 22hours stopover in dxb and nearly the same price of lh. all other flights are flights from london, which is a big difference.

Unfortunately not everyone's travelling on vacation and has the flexibility to avail the free stopover, business travellers travel on tight schedules.

Besides, is a free stop over really free? I know in TG's case, it's never really free, since the passenger has to pay for the visa (THB1000) and the departure tax (THB500). Is it similar for DXB?

Does anyone have an idea of the Loads some of the international flights out of CCU ? Does the traffic out of the city demand the current number of flights as well as the new ones in the pipeline ?

i think the demand is there, otherwise you wouldn't here always the purpose of several arlines (LH,BA) to increase flights to CCU. The only thing i think, is that the international airport can't handle to many flights.

I think this will be a range issue for AAs 777 from ORD or JFK to CCU.
AA will probably look at BOM before any other indian destination is considered.

You're probably right, BOM is a more attractive market than any other Indian airport. Despite that I am of the opinion that CCU should get a direct non stop or 1 stop service to the USA given the number of Bengalis now flying from the US to Kolkata. Chicago with its huge Bengali population should be the best bet. The international terminal though needs to be completely overhauled. Any updates on QR and AIX's impending launch in the city of joy ????

the demand is for sure there, for a non-stop flight to us. can remember, that hardly anybody was travelling to europe on the flights i were travelling, all with connecting tickets to the us.
will be interesting the impact on european carriers, when there will be more and more non-stop services US-India!
