Just read in a leading daily newspaper published from Bombay that some 200 new shanties have come up in the airport land.

Funny. What id CSIAL waiting for or are they planning to give them electricity from the runway lighting and water which comes from tankers already.

Dear VABBy,

It is nice of you to say "zip in at 100 kmph" etc sitting in DEL. I invite you to come here in the evening after 7:00 and see the situation on western express highway. It takes more than one and half hours to cover the 15 odd kilometers between borivali and the airport. Forget 100 kmph, even 50 kmph is a great achievement on these roads.

Well if you look at any major Int'l apts around the world, most of them are located far away from the city.To cover the time they are connected by superfast metro rail that can take you to the apt within half an hour or 45mins.It'll also be good from the environment point of view.

The best example would be KLIA which is 25-30 kms far away from the main city and it is connected by KLIA express.

So its imperative that Mumbai has a new apt far away from the city and which does not have land dispute.Mainly at Navi Mumbai.

The previous Govts should have thought about the airport expansion that time itself before they had allowed poor people to build huts near the arpt. Now it is too late for the Govt to suddenly ask them to leave without providing rehabilitation.

LHR is connected by Heathrow Exp but the airport is slap bang in the middle of the city.

I wouldn’t say its slap bang in the middle of the city at all. Unless you take the Heathrow Express (about 20 mins) it takes you twice that long to get to Heathrow.
All the airport terminals are in zone 6, from Piccadilly Circus it can take you 40-45 mins by the normal underground.

Hello,

Today there is one full page in HT, Mumbai devoted to the issue of slums around airport.

First some facts about the slums:
Quote:
There are 80000 slums sitting on 220 acres of encroached airport land. According to rough details given by MIAL, 220 acres of land is required for the expansion of airport.

Some official of passengers association said:
Quote:
We are running short of time. If the hutments are not removed quickly, the city will have a tough time handling air traffic.

MIAL official said:
Quote:
We need the encroached area to build a 2 tired aero bridge, hangar, taxiways, cargo terminals, etc. These developments are extremely essential to touch the global standards.

He also said that new taxiways would help optimum usage of runway 14/32.

Here is what one extremely learned MLA from Kurla has to say (there are 20000 slums in his constituency). He has been successful in preventing hte demolition for one decade now. This learned MLA has also managed to convince the slum dwellers, that they are being evicted for construction of Malls & hotels. Not an airport.Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes. He also claims that not a single slum has come up since 1999
Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes So here is what the respected person has to say
Quote:
I am not against development. All I want is that the slumdwellers get their due.

MIAL does not have a concrete plan for the revamp. Even if they do, they are not willing to reveal it. The labourers are daily wage workers nearby & hence should be rehabilated here.

If the people are rehabilitated at the same place then where should the airport go??

And finally here is what the secratary of the Slum dwellers' mahasangh has to say:
Quote:
We want to see the master plan to make sure that we are not being evicted for construction of malls and hotels. But the government is not ready to divulge details.

Now thi is like 'Ulta chor Kotwal ko dante" What problem do they have against the airport?? Mark my words, this project will be delayed by more than 3-4 years.

OT:
Even if malls are constructed on the land, what right do slum dewllers have to question the decision? They do not own the land, do they?

I agree 380, My bet is that they will give up on moving the slums (it would seem they already have) and instead proceed rapidly with the Navi Mumbai airport (which all indications point towards).

As a face saver, I reckon they will then offer the new airport (post a kangaroo Court bidding process) to the new operators of CSIA, given that there is little they can do at the present airport. There does not seem to be any will within the MH Govt at the moment and elections are approaching (state + Federal). Slum rehab, I seriously doubt it.

Its BOM airport that will be rehabilitated instead of the slums....

Taken from Hindustan times, May 5th
Quote:
The slum dwellers have given the state 15 days to decide on the rehabilitation issue or else face protests.
"we are asking international airlines to stop flying to mumbai until the state comes clean on the issue. Or else we will disrupt the airport's operations on the 16th day."

Politicians got elected due to slum dwellers but now they are doing nothing for them. At one time govt said the cut off date was 1995 now they say 2000. If we promise 100 % votes they will also extend it to 2010 Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ."

Now WTF is this?? One, they do not own the land. Two, they are given free houses even when they do not pay a single penny of Tax (by this logic, taxpayers should be given 5 star bunglows). Then what is their problem wgainst the airport??

Humanity experts on this forum, please comment Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Talk about humanity... Rolling Eyes
Bloody hell these people are talking as if the airport lands was owned by their father Mad
Or maybe as if they pay crores of Rs. as taxes to the govt Rolling Eyes
The govt is totally INCAPABLE, USELESS and GOOD FOR NOTHING... since it cannot handle rehabilitation matters, what else can we expect from them ?
At times i really feel dictatorship is needed and these supporting ministers must be HANGED TO DEATH.
