Speaking to newspersons here on Thursday night, Manager of Kerala Operations Samantha Nagahawatte said the flights would originate from three destinations in the state-- Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode every Tuesday and Friday. He said the new services, to be operational by March 27, would help in handling the regular 'Umrah' movement to Jeddah, the gateway to the holy city of Mecca. Nagahawatte said with the introduction of these flights, the airlines would have a global network of 51 destinations. The airlines with more than ten destinations had the largest international network in India and increased the number of flights from 87 to 94 with the introduction of double daily flights out of Mumbai, he added. He said the airlines had also recently introduced travel packages to attract Indian tourists to the island nation. In the package the travellers were offered various choices of destinations from the metropolis of Colombo to the beach resorts of Benetto and Negambo, he said. That will be a big blow to the arab airliners. Srilankan has just been granted permission to operate CMB JED (they were earlier operating only to DMM and RUH) and therefore will naturally offer a connection to the Kerala airports like they do to all their other Middle East destinations. That makes sense, but nothing as mentioned in the title of the thread. How can GOI be so good to UL when it doesn't allow gulf routes to other Indian airlines? But you're right, AIX does have the potential to dislodge UL, it just remains to be seen how well AI/AIX deliver! Government of India is not that desperate - on the contrary Air India's market share ex TRV and COK has dropped even further after the entry of Emirates, and also UL from CCJ. Sorry mate, when you said GOI I thought you meant Goa (Dabolim) when you were referring to the Govt of India. Still all flights out of Indian destinations by UL will be to CMB with onward connections. When UL spokespersons said Kerala-Jeddah it was just PR-speak to grab bigger headlines. You're right, AI/AIX have the potential, it remains to be seen whether they achieve it. AIX seems to be doing quite well on the Gulf routes. Any idea how they are doing in SE Asia?
