Singapore Airlines and US Airways have reached a new code-sharing agreement enabling SQ customers travelling to Las Vegas and Phoenix to connect via Los Angeles or San Francisco, says BBC Asia.
Starting June 1, those heading to Charlotte, North Carolina will be able to catch a connecting US Airways flight from New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport.
US Airways’ customers travelling to Singapore will be able to connect on SQ’s services from los Angeles and San Francisco. From the city-state, the US Airways travellers can also easily connect onto code-share flights to popular destinations in the Asia-Pacific, including Ho Chi Minh City, Bali, Jakarta, Perth and Brunei.
US Airways will also code-share on SIA services to the European gateways of Amsterdam, Zurich and Manchester.
Customers will be able to purchase tickets for the services from mid-May.

We need many many more such code share deals to really start seeing the value of these mega alliances (like *A). Unfortunately there's often a conflict between the airline's own interest vs. the interest of the alliance, and in all such cases the airline takes precedence!

I don’t completely understand this and know how this works, anyone care to explain?

Both US and SQ are Star Alliance, so aren’t they already code sharing and shouldn’t they have the ability to sell tickets on each others flights? What difference does this make?

Oh no no no!

Just because carriers are in *A, does not mean they automatically code share or have the permission to cross sell each other's flights. Each codeshare/cross selling has to be an agreement between the 2 carriers involved.

As an example, AFAIK, LH and UA have "revenue sharing" set up on flights across the Atlantic, so no matter who sells or operates the flight, each party makes some money. But they probably don't have any such arrangement on the transpacific sectors operated by UA,

SQ is one of the stingiest when it comes to code sharing or cross selling tickets - as they (rightly) have one of the strongest brands and quality in the whole *A network. Hence they're the most selective.

SQ and TG are a classic example of NO cooperation despite being in the same alliance. AFAIK, SQ/TG do not code share on services between the countries (or any sectors anywhere in the world). They actually still consider each other as competitors. OTOH, TG and MH code share on flights between BKK and KUL!!!

The biggest advantage of being part of an alliance is customer loyalty (for the airline).

Frequent fliers will prefer to fly airlines that are part of the same alliance, rather than fly an airline not part of the alliance. And they do that since they are recognized as frequent fliers and can continue to earn miles.

Hence SQ gains when United frequent fliers choose SQ for their Asian flights.

United gains when Lufthansa Frequent fliers choose LH for their American flights.

The other advantages are

* Sharing of facilities (like lounges, gates, equipment etc.)
* Common purchases for better prices/consistency
* Coordinated flight schedules and better utilization of hubs (for instance members of an alliance will prefer to start flights to the hub of the alliance since they are assured a good level of feed from the start).
etc.
