Pak to take counter move as India deploys jets in IHK

Akhtar Jamal

Islamabad—As India moves at least six Soviet-built Sukhoi-30MKI jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons to a forward air base in Kashmir, Pakistani defence strategists are considering “proper counter moves”.

The Indian decision to deploy most advanced long-ranged bombers at Avantipura air force base near Srinagar, Occupied Jammu and Kashmir came following unconfirmed reports that India is eager to get GBU-39 small diameter smart bombs that can penetrate more than six feet of reinforced concrete.

In a television interview Wednesday former chairman of Senate and PML-Q leader Waseem Sajjad warned that “U.S. designs are clear, they now say that not only Afghanistan but Pakistan should be the target.”

Fears are also growing here that Indo-Israeli secret talks held recently might be aimed at a “larger design against Pakistan and its strategic assets.”

The deployment of Sukhoi jets close to Pakistan and China border is taken as a serious move by authoritative sources who consider it as part of a larger multi-national strategy to increase pressure on Pakistan.

According to military experts twin-seater Russian strategic jets of Indian Air Force can carry upto eight tonnes of armaments including nuclear bombs and cruise at a speed of 3,200 kilometres an hour.

Defence experts were also worried about steady flow of modern and hi-tech armaments and defence technology from Western states to India and consider it as a “provocative move.” Last week India also requested the U.S. Government for 20 AGM-84L HARPOON Block II missiles; 4 ATM-84L HARPOON Block II Exercise missiles; containers; training devices; spare and repair parts; supply/technical support; support equipment; personnel training and training equipment; technical data and publications.

According to an official report from Washington U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics support to India is estimated over $170 million.

According to Defence Security Cooperation Agency of the United States “This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of an important partner and to strengthen the U.S.-India strategic relationship, which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in South Asia.”
