Hi guys:
Just wanted to ask, what is the situation in Jari Mari? I get confusing news from different people, can someone tell me what the police situation currently is?
Especially at night?
Sean, your night shots are the best i have ever seen , honestly amazing!
Regards
Nitin |

According to my trip to BOM yesterday, Jari Mari is really wet and the heavy rains can surely make things even worse!!! |

I think Nitin wants to know about police interference, rather than weather. After seeing all the wonderful night time shots on this site, I can conclude that everyone got out safely. _________________ http://openflights.org/user/akumanduri |

Sorry forgot to add the smiley to my post. I know the security was the thing at question !!!
However, I really think the security is not an issue after all so many pics are coming up. |

Posting from Mumbai rwy thread here as it is appropriate to this thread!
What a coincidence.....Mumbai's 09-27 shut down for a fortnight and we being banned from going to jarimari . have not spotted there for quite sometime now as i have been warned and told very sternly not to come here by the very same residents (slumdwellers) who very kindly played host for the past couple of years to so many of us indian spotters & foreigners !
On that note , VOHY and VOHS were a welcome breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively.
Somebody has been a very busy bee upto mischief! From what i gather by way of bits and pieces info, apparently word going around that hillock is that we folks are earning big bucks by selling these photos to magazines etc much to the dismay of the downtrodden folks who "play host" to us.
When i shouted hoarse on behalf of all spotters who frequent that place that it is just a HOBBY, no one believes that reasoning, i've given up trying to clear the air and explain the "matter" to those illiterate people! i've been warned of dire consequences if i go there again or bring along foreign nationals ! So, i've telephonically contacted most spotters and shared the experience with them .
Anyways, 14-32 is operational for the most part hence i'm only nursing a broken ego at the moment !
i'll really feel awful when 09-27 resumes fulltime.
C'est la vie! All good things come to an end!!! |

Sean, the JetLite new liveried aircraft was a nice catch from Jari Mari.
I wonder what the situation is right now, after your last post on this, and the shootout in the 332 upper deck (for a moment, I wondered where the upper deck on the IT 332 was, which was parked at BOM). And yes - I'm sure you;ll have lots of gems for us from the 14-32 operations - I do not see many updates on your pictures sites. It is hard to imagine that you of all people - have been inactive for such a long itme! One of my favourites of your shots was the AI 332 taken from a local train - superb!
Thanks, Sumantra. |

Very sorry to hear of the situation at Jari Mari.... can only hope that the situation improves and that the slumdwellers - who have been our friends and helpers in the past see what really happens with the spotters and that those that do profit at the expense of others are hopefully in the minority!
Having made several happy trips to J-M and enjoyed both the view and the photography and the company of some of you fellow spotters - many thanks to my good friend Vishal! I can say, that as a foreigner I was made very welcome and also that NONE of my photos I have taken from there I have never sold any! In fact I still shoot slides as well as digital and the slides are still in their boxes at home straight from the processors! I only exchange with other collectors and all my images are copywrited so they cannot be used.
I can sympathise with the locals in that they have made us all feel very welcome in the past and warned us when the police are arriving, but we should all remember that this is where these people live, any unwanted attention will only affect their way of life.
So there will always be a few who have sold pics etc - as we all aspire to do in the photography hobby, but remember where you are and how the locals treat you - don't be eliteist! don't think you are above them! I would suggest to bring some small gifts every time you do try and visit and always show some respect!
When I was there a foreigner "Honza" posted that he was coming to India to photograph planes for himself and would like assistance in the area - no one answered him! I contacted him and we met - had some great days at J-M and are now good friends! Honza did not sell any of his pics. Also Mel and I struck up a good friendship and we would meet on the ramp at night and enjoy some good conversations.
We (Honza and I) brought some water, gifts and freebies from the planes and gave them out to whoever was interested, we took some great photos of the kids and showed them how our cameras worked and had a truely memorable experience!
The article in the TOI will go some way to helping our cry and indeed, in my opinion and those of most of the European spotters and airport authorities, Spotters at your local airport are a benefit!
Why? I hear you ask, because they become a community and know each other and the locals, everyone usually has a cellphone and any starngers catch the eye - genuine spotters will be friendly and knowledgeable wheras terrorists will stick out a mile! a quick call and the police are there and hopefully any deviency averted! Something the redneck Americans could look and learn from!
So remember - we are all human, treat others as you would like to be treated yourself, don't step into someones back yard and ignore them or treat them like dirt! Give a small gift and make a new friend and make the world and our hobby a happier place! A stranger is just a friend you have not met yet! _________________ If it isn't broke - then dont try to fix it! |

Very nicely written Sir. Its only the locals who had/ have been kind to our hobby that has lead to some nice spotting experiences. Now however after the carnage.. the paranoia of bazooka-like-SLR-lenses-guy clicking anything public is understandable. |

Ha Ha you must be using some outdated and big equipment there Sreenath...
Only joking.... I understand the situation, coming from Northern Ireland where we had terrorists all of my life... I don't have room for that nonsense which is why I get on with people no matter where I am in the world!
Good luck and looking forward to seeing some more of your pics! _________________ If it isn't broke - then dont try to fix it! |
