All Nippon Airways(ANA) will start a new daily service between Tokyo Narita and Mumbai from September 1.The equipment used will be 737-700/ER and will be in an all business configuration with 36 business class seats.

Like i said on a.net perhaps a few business contracts siginings with the likes of Sony/Toyota etc... otherwise i dont see just a premium market between the two cities.

Nevertheless a good use of the potential of the 73GER.

Well, they plan to start in September 2007, still some way off. And presumably enough time for them to review what appears to be a bit of a ambitious plan, unless they (ANA) are looking at seling Business Class for the price of Premium Economy.

I don't know if being cooped up in a narrow body single aisle mini-jet for 6-7 hours is worth the 2x2 seating and 61 inches pitch.

This will be interesting to watch when it launches. Methinks it will splutter more off than on for some time, and then move away to running charters.

the far east was always underrepresented in BOM.. good to see ANA come in.. am wondering when JAL would decide to come to BOM.

Thought the 737-700 was an error, before realising that they meant a BBJ (sorta).

Exactly! Shocked I had the same thought until I saw the 36 seat config. Laughing

WoW!!!! Assuming this i guess:
1. This might be the record for the longest scheduled 737-700 flight.
2. I guess there has to be a fuel stop somewhere. I don't think 737-700 has that range to do BOM-NRT non-stop. So where is this fuel stop going to be?

Cheers

Its the 737-700/ER and not the 737-700.So,I guess it would be able to do it nonstop.

Why would they want to sell real Business Class seats on a BBJ for premium economy prices? With only 36 persons on board, it would be like flying your own private plane.

Given the very successfuly transatlantic operations of 737BBJs in premium configurations, such a plane should be very comfortable. As it is, when you're seated in J Class on the upper deck of a 744, its not like you're running around the plane playing tennis. A 737BBJ would be akin to having your own upper deck of a 744.

And why would it splutter? Right now the only way business travellers can fly to and from Bombay to Japan is via AI's ratty 743s that make at least one stop, or via TG, CX or SQ turning a 7.5 hour nonstop into a 14 hour odyssey.

But that still entails taking a domestic flight from BOM to Palam, then getting your bags and trekking it out to IGI, etc. At the end of the day, if you're a Mumbai or Tokyo business traveller, time is money, and a nonstop is better than connecting through DEL.

Very exciting news. May be JAL can start flights to BOM on a 767 and provide economy class as well!

As I mentioned on A.net, it's also possible that NH is hoping to get *A traffic via the *A hub in NRT. With UA bringing in plenty of service from west coast cities to NRT, it would be really convenient to connect to a non-stop NRT-BOM service. This will provide *A freaks another option for a one-stop West Coast-BOM service, besides the likes of LH+UA via Europe.

Duh Sony Toyota offices in Mumbai thats news to me. Mate Sony India has got its main corporate office in Delhi on Mathura Rd.

Toyota is in india thru a JV with Kirloskar Motors their main registered office is in Banglore.

Honda again is in with a small share tie up with SIEL (Siyaram Industries Engineering Limited) has got its corporate office up and running in Greater Noida along with Honda Motorcycles Scooters india Limited.

Japanese seem to being having a strong presence up north rather than down west.

Regarding hw the flight will do thats something i guess will say that time will tell the tales of horror.

Sure enough, but I am quite sure that Mumbai being where all the financial capital is, and Tokyo being what it is, at least 252 Japanese and Indian businessmen a week fly between the two cities.

actually we started off by discussing the possibility of tie up between ANA and Japanese corps in India, and that's what lead one to suspect why BOM and not DEL.

In general scheme of things, BOM would be better to start considering JL already services DEL.

If their eqp is a 737-700 that means load factors between the two places is not too good. Anyone with the figures of JAL's 772 service to DEL...how well are they doing?

No, not necessarily.
It just means that they want to focus on the top end of the market alone, without having to worry about low yield Economy class tickets. The 737-700NG allows them to do just that.

From October 1,flights between DEL and NRT will be increased from 4 to 5 Weekly. But JALways which is JAL's low cost international subsidiary will takeover the operations to DEL.

What sort of update? It says in the first post that service will begin on September 1st. So, we're still five months away.

It's not yet loaded on the GDS for sale, which is pretty surprising given the announcement was a few months back, and the service is supposed to start in 5 months time. I think maybe they're having second thoughts?
