Yup Yash. Viewed it entirely, was shocked and amused at the same time.
Looks like a disaster waiting to happen when it comes to language mismatches.

English should be made mandatory for Air Traffic communications.

It’s certainly shocking, but I can’t say I was surprised when I first saw this video (it was discussed on airliners.net a while ago)
A lot of the blame can be laid on the pilot of course, and I am not defending him but the fact is that ATC could have done a lot more to help out in that situation. Is that an excuse to not speak English, of course not.....
If I remember correctly, the Chinese government has given their pilots until 2008 to pass an English proficiency test of some sort. Whoever doesn’t pass won’t be allowed to fly (to America and elsewhere I hope)

Another issue is accents. Occasionally while listening to liveATC I have a hard time understanding some crew who can speak English, but their accents get in the way.

I don't blame the ATC guy for not having sympathy. The guy probably sees this nonsense every day and is probably frustrated by it by now.

Yeah, Mandarin ( which is a derivative of different chinese dialects ) is the spoken language. All written communications are done in CHINESE or sinitic which is considered a language or language family . Infact CHINESE is a tonal language and a member of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages.

Do I sympathize with him? Yes I do.
Was he arrogant and did he not help the situation by being arrogant? Yes I think he did.

Should he have handled the situation differently, yes he should have. I partly understand what was going through his (ATC guys) head, but just because he had a bad day or was (rightly) frustrated doesn’t mean it’s excusable.
