BEIJING, July 2, 2007 (AFP) - Five people were injured when the front of an Air China plane collapsed as passengers were boarding the aircraft at Beijing airport, state media said Monday.

The wheels of the plane, scheduled to fly to Dubai, were retracted while the jet was still at the boarding gate on Sunday afternoon, Xinhua news agency and other media outlets said, without explaining why.

Doctors at the airport said five people were treated for injuries, the Beijing Youth Daily reported, without giving any details.

Xinhua quoted the General Administration of Civil Aviation as saying one passenger and one crew member, both Chinese, were taken to hospital, although their injuries were described as "slight."

The aviation administration was carrying out an investigation into what caused the collapse, Xinhua added.

Isn't this the same thing that happened to an Air India A310 at DEL on April 9, 2007? The aircraft NLG retracted while it was being towed from the runway?

The AI A310 NLG collapsed as it was being towed, since the NLG was weakened following the Emergency. The Gear pins were not positioned & the Aircraft was towed.

In the Chinese NLG collapse,It seems someone has overridden the Landing gear lever, which is normally inoperative to the up position mechanically on Ground unless overridden.

If a test is being carried out the LG pins need to be positioned in all three gears.

The NLG is more suseptible because of the direction of retraction.
