Israel: Update: Radio interference disrupts flights at Ben Gurion International Airport for second time
06-Jun-2007 08:37:15 PM (GMT) JERUSALEM (AP) _ Supervisors at Israel's Ben-Gurion international airport halted air traffic for the second time Wednesday because of interference in control tower communications from pirate radio stations.

Before midnight, all takeoffs were canceled after the pirate broadcasts disrupted all the frequencies used by air traffic controllers, airport official Uri Bar Lev told Army Radio.

He said efforts would be made to land incoming flights, but if radio contact was impossible, they would be send to other airports.

Earlier, takeoffs were stopped for an hour. Israel Radio played recordings of calls between the tower and an incoming airliner that were blotted out for five seconds at a time by the pirate broadcasts.

This is a ``clear danger,'' Orlev said, appealing to the government to put the pirates out of business. The same problem crops up about once a month.

``These disruptions do not allow us to run the airport as we should,'' he told Channel 2 TV.

It was not known when full service would be resumed..

Israel: Update: Pirate radios continue to disrupt flights at Ben Gurion International Airport
07-Jun-2007 08:27:59 AM (GMT) JERUSALEM, June 7, 2007 (AFP) - Air traffic was disrupted at Israel's international Ben Gurion airport on Thursday because pirate radio stations were interfering with communications systems, management reported.

The pirate signals were hampering radio communication between the airport control tower and air traffic, causing a gap of 10 to 15 minutes between each takeoff to ensure security and provoking lengthy delays, it said.

Army radio reported that a Palestinian radio station based in the West Bank political capital of Ramallah was one of the culprits, while public radio reported that Israeli army data transfers were also impeding communications.

Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz told the radio from the United States that the interference amounted to a "time bomb endangering the lives of millions of travellers who transit through Ben Gurion airport".

The Israeli authorities have sought action against the pirate stations that have caused problems with the airport's communication systems for years.

Surprising that the Israelis have let this continue for years, they're generally very quick to wipe out any security threat.

Sounds like a chance to move to a secured datachannel for communication between ATC and aircraft.

Radio interefernec continues................

11-Jul-2007 06:20:38 PM (GMT) JERUSALEM, July 11, 2007 (AFP) - Broadcasts by pirate radio stations forced authorities to delay flights taking off Wednesday from Israel's international airport outside Tel Aviv, civil aviation authorities said.

The airport's control tower, having difficulty communicating with the pilots of airplanes waiting to take off, began intermittent delays from 5:00 pm (1400 GMT), an official told AFP.

Public radio reported that some of the interference was coming from four radio stations broadcasting from the northern city of Haifa.

Police subsequently shut down the stations, but other interferences were then experienced.

Similar problems occurred on June 7, and Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz said they were a "time bomb endangering the lives of millions of travelers passing through Ben Gurion airport."

He promised to act against pirate radio stations, which for years have been causing problems for the airport that the authorities have been unable to resolve.

Grrrrr!!! These palestinians !!!! When the heck will they grow up, mature and develop as a civilised race? Always up to some trick or the other. It's time Israel makes a clear stand on the disruption issue.
