MiG-21 Bison aircraft phased out from Uttarlai squadron
Nov 1, 2023
Jaisalmer: An era came to an end as the skies of Uttarlai in Barmer district witnessed the final flight of MiG-21 Bison aircraft on Monday. This historic occasion featured the MiG-21 Bison aircraft flying in formation with the Su-30 MKI, symbolizing the transition.
During this ceremony, personnel from all the three services were present. The MiG-21 Squadron has served the country for six decades and has significantly contributed to the war effort during Indo-Pak conflicts.
The squadron known as "OORIALS" has been operating MiG-21 since 1966 and is now being re-equipped with Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft. This change signifies the commitment of the Indian Air Force to modernise and protect the skies of the nation.
MiG-21 upgraded Bison was operational with three Indian Air Force squadrons, all located in Rajasthan. These were No. 3 Squadron “Cobras” at Nal/Bikaner Air Force Station, No. 4 Squadron “Oorials” at Uttarlai Air Force Station, and No. 23 Squadron “Panthers” at Suratgarh Air Force Station. Now, it remains operational in two squadrons only. This conversion leaves the IAF with only two MiG-21 squadrons and aims to phase out the aircraft by 2025. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.
