Neat photos. You don't get to see a bi-plane up close that often!

Here is a sequence I caught of a banner towing aircraft at SPG, taking off, deploying his tow rope, and diving & picking up his banner. You don't see that too often.

All wrapped up in the extreme Florida summer heat.

Sadly, this airplane was involved in a fatal crash yesterday. The airplane lost power while picking up her banner, and crashed into the bay. The pilot was killed on impact, and the airplane sank about 25 feet into the water. By the time I got to the site, all I saw was the medical examiner's vehicle and police cruisers. I did not think it appropriate to take pictures.

The airplane was raised this morning.

This is really sad, it is all th more shocking for us readers, since you have covered this plane and the banner-towing in great detail, here.

Yes, it was really sad indeed. The last time I saw this routine was a couple of days before the crash ... the "pull up" after picking up and dropping off the banner was incredible - almost vertical, and very loud; at full throttle. I hate to say it, but I did think that it would be a disaster if something went wrong. Less than 48 hours later, something did go wrong.

I had the chance to photograph the N3N-3 again this morning. More of the N3N-3 and a 1933 Waco UIC coming soon.

Hey...are these from the air, or from the control tower, or some high building, with a zoom-in?

They are from the vantage point of the terminal building / overhang of the adjoining restaurant. The biplanes are often parked right next to the building, so getting up on the balcony there offers a great view. You will see what I mean in the upcoming pics.

The (1933) Waco UIC - a rather rare classic closed-cabin twin-blade propellor four-seater biplane.
