CHANDIGARH: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has crashed the foreign dreams of two private airlines from the city airport, unwilling to give the go-ahead to international flights from the terminal on a??technicala?? grounds.
Sources confirmed to TOI that the air force authorities expressed its inability to handle international flights on account of its tight schedule of handling its operational flights from the local airbase sorties for the strategically important Ladakh area.

^^ Sounds like BS. If the issue is that of a busy runway, surely they can state that they have a limited number of slots, and then let the airlines utilize their existing slot for either an intl or domestic service. And the airport can open up a few new slots during their off-peak hours (every airport has those). _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

It seems to me like they're saying no for flight operations at nasty o'clock, but might be okay with daytime flights.

The powers-that-be and people at large need to decide once and for all IMO, whether aviation is a priority and critical infrastructure. Back in the day, the British decided that railways were critical to the sustenance of the Raj and hence built over 50000km before India's independence.
Once this critical decision is made, all other constraints can be taken care of. We will see the development of civilian airports which do not encumber strategic /military needs.
The problem with us (in India) is that we always take half-measures and then try to "adjust" around the constraints that arise out of these half measures.
This mentality is the main stumbling block and the gap that separates us from the more developed nations. And this occurs in every aspect of our lives..not just aviation. |
