I am sorry I jumped in a little late into the discussion but it was interesting to read about the network side. I will try and contribute a bit.
Looks like it will start with a domestic airline before the rules are changed and it goes international in the long run.
Between Silk Air & Singapore, they service multiple destinations in India and this JV should consider each as their mini hub which will feed into the traffic to SQ flights.
If you look at most of the timings, BLR/BOM/MAA/CCU/DEL which are the major stations - most of the arr/dep are around midnights. With a strong feeder to these places, they can have good connecting times on outbound and juggle a bit to have better connecting times on inbound.
From a catchment perspective it is DEL & BLR which will play a major role to feed into international flights.
What is also important is the aircraft which this airline selects. I would not be surprised if the A320s which Silk Air is discarding come into this JV. That way the cost would be lower, the aircraft maintenance history would be known and induction would be smooth. Lower cost base would really help it be profitable soon |

Agree that Indigo can be hurt with the arrival of Tata-SQ. Especially when their fares are not much less and a lack of loyalty program will hurt in the long run. I think Jet will benefit, because it will take out SG or relegate it to a minor player. With 3 "full service" airlines, people might pay attention to loyalty program especially when the fares are only marginally higher. |

Ameya, I actually disagree. The tata sq airline should be much much more than a feeder to SQ. SIN is already a major hub (a premium for that matter). For points west, the ME carriers already provide a hard to beat one stop option. What's missing in India is an airline with a strong India hub with multiple flights all timed for the indian traveler. IIf one wants to leave at 4am let them fly the ME carriers. THe one thing you hear about AI in the NYC area is people love landing in BOM and DEL in time for dinner rather than 2am. Also people want the comfort to know if they miss their flight there are other flights to easily catch to your final domestic destination. Airlines like Delta and United show how a strong loyalty program coupled with a strong domestic hub can capture pax even when you offer lower service levels than the competition. No airline has offered anything close to this in India. If SQ does that they could capture a good share on India origin pax plus pull off something similar to AF / KLM where CDG (in this case SIN) is the premium hub with many flights offering first class and Amsterdam (in this case DEL) is the hub that can discount a bit more. So on Europe to Oz flights they can go after two separate pax with out cannibalizing each other too much. |

Knowing now that this new startup is on the cusp of breaking into the ever expanding IndAv sector, I was wondering what the fleet would be?
The usual A320-330 mix or could we see some of the B738s which SilkAir ordered being diverted to india? _________________ Why can't Donuts be square? |

Hand me downs from SQ and Silk Air to begin with, no doubt. _________________ Yeah. |

So the FIPB gave the green light as expected. Great news for India and Singapore. It's just great to see how the TATA Group is making a huge comeback into the field of aviation. I am sure that they will do many great things for the industry and also for the country. Operations should begin within a year or so, given all other permits are secured and approvals granted.
I am also starting to wonder about the fleet of this new venture! It is pretty evident that Airbus A320s are dominating the skies above India. Would love to see some more Boeing 737s. |

I believe A320/330/B777s.....but someone was telling me the B737 option over the A320 still exists. _________________ Think of the Brighter side !!! |
