I'm planning on Upgrading/Purchasing a good Desktop with 17/19/21" TFT monitor with Vista OS.
Any good suggestions.

Please avoid IBM desktops (now lenovo). I am suffering for 4 years. Buy HP/Compaq ones. They are good.

well i'd advise you to buy a good Core 2 Duo based system in order to last you a good deal down the road.

This is my configuration planned by the end of June.

CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (may buy the E6750 if it is released by early July)
Motherboard : XFX nForce n680i LT
Graphics Card : eVGA 8800GTS 640MB (from the US)
RAM :: Corsair Value Ram 2GB (1GBx2)
Case/Chassis : undecided -- maybe Coolermaster/Thermaltake Armour
Display : Viewsonic VG series 20" or larger

thats the most part.. I already have the graphics card, arrive last week.

But honestly the system i plan above is because i play FS a lot in addition to a few other racing/action games. For FS.. you really need a good graphics system coupled with a powerful processor and a min of 2GB RAM.
not to mention VISTA needs a good processing engine as well.

so if you have to get a new rig.. i suggest you first plan on what you would want to use it for. Intel has just cut prices and the E6600 is sitting pretty at 12000INR in the market at the moment. It's one of the best processors for its buck and will overclock on standard cooling right upto 3 Ghz.

I'd honestly suggest you get a graphics card as well, since you would use a good big display im sure u'd love to watch movies and run a few good games at the best details. Couple that most cards now can run HDCP content at some lovely resolutions, you will really enjoy your new computer.

But first i'd suggest you sort out the specifics of your use before i can guide you with the exact hardware. PM me if you need anything else.

MEL, one more thing...for the monitor, if you want good colour reproduction, good contrast ratio, etc then go for CRT monitor.

If you want compact looks & good aesthetics then go for LCD. Performance of LCD is less than that of CRT.

ever since i learnt to assemble a system by myself back in the good old days of the P2/P3.. sheer trial and error and watchin a friend of mine who was a computer engineer... i have never relied on anyone else for anything to do with computers. It did help i knew DOS and knew the format commands and what not that were required to install Win98/WinME/WinXP

the sheer cost advantage that you can gain by choosing individual parts is much more than buying a branded PC.. even today where the brands have claimed the difference to an assembled PC is not much.. fact is.. you still get the best bang for the buck by assembling your own PC. But it would depend on how confident you are with computers and if you know someone who can help you with hardware troubles if you are not so confident.

and Akshay.. its not necessarily true wrt LCD monitors.. technology has improved significantly and they do last quite a bit longer than the older LCD. Apart from an odd dead pixel here and there.. LCDs have really come a long way. Not to mention refresh rates and response times are phenomenally better than older generations and they keep getting better every few months..

Assembling your own is only advantageous if it is going to be a high end/gaming system. If you are using the computer for simple things such as email, web surfing, word processing and basic multimedia a branded PC is just fine. You also get the benefit of a warranty/tech support on the entire system instead of individual components. This could be useful for those that don't know much about computers.

I normally pick my computers thru a friend who deals in this field.The Advantage is that Any problem can get attended free & life time assured.
However as One gets familiar with a Computer,the Computer problems faced are reduced with time.

Dure core processor + 1GB RAM + 17"- 21" TFT monitor is def needed.

I'm looking for the best.In speed,quality & reliability.

You know Mel, if you are willing to do some re-training and move away from windows a Mac is the way to go.
I know the new Mac Book Pros have the dual core- and can boot directly to windows if needed- so im assuming there are some desktop models out there which can do the same.

I don’t have a Mac, but when my current laptop dies (pretty soon) the next one will be! They are much much better.

I've never used a Mac before.However Since My official use is on Windows based OS,I think I'll go with the Same one.

Windows vista is relatively new & has certain good features.I waited for sometime hoping the errors would get ironed out by then.
