Ashok Leyland to enter airport bus market

BS Reporter / Chennai May 09, 2007

Ashok Leyland Limited is planning a foray into the market for airport passenger buses.

With an eye on a share of the airport bus market, Leyland has lined up three buses under the brand name ‘Avion’ for this segment.

Leyland currently operates airport passenger buses for national carrier Air-India, and would sign agreements for similar services with other aircraft carriers this year, Ashok Leyland managing director R Seshasayee told the media.

Leyland is also laying emphasis on offering a range of fully-built vehicles, including buses and trucks this year, he added.

The company expects the first phase of its integrated manufacturing plant being set up at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, to be complete by the second half of 2008-09. The second phase is expected to be completed by March 2010.

By the end of the second phase, Ashok Leyland expects to be rolling out 1,60,000 vehicles annually out of this plant.

My school buses were of Ashok Meyland and they were of a higher standard than the normal buses of AL which are used in schools/colleges/company transports. I would say they're quite good in the segment.

Well, I remember seeing AL buses at the mumbai airport way back in 2001-2002. 9W was operating them.

Strange though that Volvo which has a strong foothold in India now should have made the first move......

Also we may see some action from TATA who have not acquired Daewoo...

The best buses tht I hv been on Indian airports are those of 9W at BOM and DEL and the IT First Class one. The 6E buses in DEL also look cool, although I hv never been in one myself.

Last week at BLR , I was surprised to see an old Infy bus ferrying pax around!! Infy had tht bus around 5 years back. All Infy buses are chartered frm SRS Travels and this one still sports the old full blue Infy livery!! .. I guess its DN who is using it at the airport now.. not sure though

Honestly speaking since my childhood I hate Ashok Leyland... Tata's have always fascinated me... I was so obsessed that I used to draw buses and opened my own imaginary transport company...
Tata's have a low maintenance cost... Moreover the Volvo's are great too... And a Chinese firm Kinglong has also entered Indian bus industry...
BTW when I visited Tehran, Iran way back in 1999 I saw airport buses which had driving controls on both the ends...

Ashok Leyland are noisy and still they have the system of gears... I mean the installation still the curvy rod...
Actually how a bus turns out depends upon the Body builder of the bus... The best in this field are:
Sutlej (See their airport bus section..4 major Indian carriers are their customers)- www.sutlej.com
JCBL- www.jcbl.com/
HMM Coaches- www.hmmcoaches.com
Ruby Body, Mumbai
Azad Body, Delhi

These are some of the well known names in the field of bus body making. There are many, but these are the well known ones...

"Meyland" appears to be a typo.

Anyway, I disagree with the above statement saying how a bus turns out depends on the coach builder. If you put a fantastic body on a piece of junk chassis it's pretty much useless. I'm no fan of Leyland either but any bus on a truck/bus chassis (Leyland or Tata) with manual transmissions for long distance use is just garbage.

BTW, that's funny you mentioned the "curvy rod". Those always made me laugh.

There are many who do this to fool the customers into beleiving that it is a Volvo. But it can be easily identified which is a volvo and which is not.

I like Ruby Rushi coaches amongst all

Ruby Rushi was the only coach builder for DTC's Tata buses when new lot of company fitted CNG buses were introduced. But now, it's not so.
Moreover, Sutlej is still one of the best in the field. The high society schools in Delhi like GD Goenka, KR Manglam etc. have Sutlej built bodies for their buses. Sutlej is the main brain behind introducing new bus designs which eventually have been copied by others.
Talking about the Volvos, I have seen an Azad Body insignia on most of them indicating that the body is built by them. I was shocked to see such a great work by Azad even knowing they built the 2 initial buses on Delhi Lahore route.

Bodies of ALL volvos are built by Azad!!

The quality of Sutlej is good but I do not like the looks of their buses. Somehow I feel that they are out of proportion

Thanks for the information regarding Volvos.
Actually, Sutlej has a major hand in redefining Indian buses, prior to entry of Volvo. It pioneered into bus designing. If you have seen GD Goenka buses and others, they are all built by Sutlej.
Regarding the designs, the model which has four head lamps, two on each side (one big and one small) has been designed by Sutlej. Moreover, the design having Scorpio headlamps in front along with two old Honday city tail lights stacked above each other both the sides.
