GUWAHATI: An IAF chopper pilot who took AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to riot-hit areas of lower Assam from Guwahati airport on Tuesday refused to ferry him back citing bad weather. The pilot stood his ground despite defence minister A K Antony intervening.
"Guwahati ATC had cleared its flight but the IAF had a bad weather report," a source said. The chopper carried Rahul to Kokrajhar from Dhubri, from where he returned to Guwahati by road. Rahul will fly back to New Delhi by a special aircraft on Tuesday morning.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who accompanied Rahul by the same chopper, is returning by train . The IAF refused to reveal the name of its pilot.
"The IAF earlier rejected Salakati helipad for the chopper's landing in Kokrajhar saying it was unsafe. A new helipad was built overnight at nearby Bongaigaon stadium. The IAF again refused to land at Bongaigaon and took the chopper to Kokrajhar at 2.45 pm. The weather over Kokrajhar was alright but the pilot said that weather over Guwahati wasn't suitable for flying. At 5.30 pm, Rahul returned to Guwahati by road," a source said.

are there rules and regulation about how a simple MP can request help of IAF to ferry him to another destination. Or the magic of Gandhi family just works??

The Indian Air Force on Wednesday said the refusal by its pilot to fly Rahul Gandhi from Kokrajhar to Guwahati in Assam was because of safety reasons and it strongly stands by the decision of its officer.
"Based on the prevailing weather and approaching sunset, the pilot taking the safety of the VIP as being paramount, arrived at the decision that it was unsafe to undertake the flight," said IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Gerard Gallway.
"The pilot’s decision was taken using his professional judgement in the interest of safety of aircraft and its occupants.
"IAF strongly stands by the decision of the pilot, since flight safety and the safety of the VIPs on board are considered paramount," he said.
Due to the refusal by the pilot to fly, the Congress leader had changed his travel plans for reaching Guwahati from Kokrajhar.
"The last leg was planned from Kokrajhar to Guwahati around 1700 hours and the weather at Guwahati was reported as continuous rain, lightning and thundershowers, with two cumulonimbus (CB) cells overhead and in the vicinity of the airfield," Gallway said.
The weather at diversionary airfield Hashimara and en route from Kokrahar to Guwahati was also overcast with low clouds and widespread rain patches, he said, adding the helicopter has still not been able to return to Guwahati due to continuing bad weather. _________________ Rajeev |
