Since the US Presedential election is few months away, I'am starting this thread to discuss about who has the chance to become the next US President?

Can Obama make it to the 2nd term? or is it Mitt Romney the right choice for American?

US Presedential elections have been closely watched across the globe. Even in India also it means a lot. From India point of view, the major issue would be the immigration policy.

If Romney was to win, will he improve the trade relations with India.

The important point of discussion will be as a Republican nominee, will Romney's Foreign Policies with the Middle East be to go for a war with Iran and Syria. He has stated that if he becomes the US President, he would 1st visit Isreal and support them for an attack on Iran's nuclear arsenal.

Current scene in the US is that there are lots of job loss and the economy is not doing good.

According to you guys will Romney be a better bet than Obama in creating more jobs in the US?

Would like to know from you all.

Cheers.

Romney seems like a wierdo to me, perhaps it's his Mormom faith that gives me that impression.

Easy to say and grab attention of diehard Republicans than to actually walk the talk. Haven't we seen that happening with Obama already?

"America doesn't torture" or "I will close Guantanamo if I become president" - well, 4 years down the line, Guantanamo is still holding bad guys and no end in sight.

Agreed. These past few election cycles have been filled with outlandish, unrealistic, and unreasonable promises. Another example is how Romney promised to create 12 million jobs. How, as President, is he going to create 12 million jobs without massive government spending? This would go against how he has campaigned in recent months, opposing big government and excessive spending.

The Election campaign from both camps have become more personal than the real issues facing Americans.

The recent burning of the US embassy in Libya has forced these candidates focus on foreign policy and National Security rather than the economy and job creation.

With Mitt Romney criticizing Obama for not taking aggressive stance against the terrorist who did this.

Actually there is. Gary Johnson is campaigning on behalf of the Libertarian party. I am sure that some independents may be running. The issue is that they are too small to make any significant difference, especially since states are winner-take-all, meaning that whoever gets the most votes in a state takes all the electoral college votes for that state.

In the US it is very hard for a 3rd party candidate to win elections due to the electoral college system - which desperately needs reform. Last one who came close was Ross Perot in 1992 elections.

With most states safely either in Obama or Romney's column, they need to campaign in only a few states, no more than 8. Right now Obama is leading in most of these tossup states, so advantage Obama unless he screws up.

On immigration, Obama is sympathetic to illegal immigrants (both visa overstayers and illegal entry), but US Congress controls the agenda and nothing can be done without Congress approval. Romney is taking a more hardline approach to satisfy his party, however he also is generally soft on immigration too. On legal immigration, a proposal to increase the H-1b visas is held up in the US congress (even though both parties support it) and there may be breakthrough after the elections.

The 1st Presidential debate, held on October 3rd, clearly saw Mitt Romney taking the advantage over Obama. The topic was regarding the American economy.

During this 90 min debate, Mitt Romney stated clearly what are his plans in reviving the economic condition, reduce unemployment and how to provide less expensive healthcare. Romney spoke about cutting tax rates for the Corporates.

Whereas Obama fumbled during the entire debate. I thought he was not at his usual best. He could'nt answer assertively to most of the questions and rebuttals that we were thrown at him by Mitt Romney and the organizer.

Obama spoke about the importance of raising the tax rates and utilising that for medical insurance and for medicare. He said that this move by his government has helped in providing people affordable medicare.

Throughout the whole debate, Obama focused on Middle Class while Mitt Romney was towards Pro-Rich. Mitt Romney stated that inorder for Americans to prosper and improve their skills and achieve goals, there has to be Free enterprise and less intervention from the Government.

I feel this is a closely fought election. At this stage there are no clear winners. Even though Mitt Romney was the clear winner in the 1st debate, still there is a chance for Obama to do well in the remaining 2 debates. Obama being a good debator, he will bounce back.

The performance during the remaining 2 debates will hold the key as to who will get the advantage of voters confidence from key swing states like Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia etc.

Indian govt has for far too long pandered to the interests of the Democrats. They are full of talk and no action...both Prez and SoS come across as phony when it comes to India.

GOP is more realistic..there is apparently no mention of India in Romneys foreign policy outlook..(the guy doesnt appear to have travelled much anyway)..so they will have a fresh perspective if and when they come to power and actually engage with India. In any case, India should stop cozying up to the US on international political matters and show some spine of its own.

Yes I agree that India stands to benefit if Mitt Romney, a Republican candidate, becomes the next US president. In the Bush era as well India were able to sign the Nuclear deal, outsourcing was possible.

But then the worrying factor is Republicans are conservative when it comes to their National Security. They will go to any extent to protect their borders and their International allies. They are ready to go for a war with Iran, Syria and other regions.

This world cannot afford another war. We have already to seen the amount of financial and human loss that has taken place in Afghanistan and Iraq.

That is why I feel Obama should continue for the next term.

A lot depends on how much weight each state brings!

All the "jobs being outsourced to India" election year bluster by both Romney and Obama will go by the wayside, and it will be back to business as usual.

India will continue to be a major ally of the US.

This Presidential race is still not over as the counting in the state of Florida is still on. Obama has only 2% lead over Mitt Romney in the popular votes which could decide who will be the US president.

That is a sign of a mature democracy. Unlike in some other 'democracies' where every two bit joker can start a political party, get a following and seats in the parliament, leading to a chaotic and indecisive coalition where everyone does nothing useful besides lining his or her pocket.

Two party system, any day!

I don't think it matters. Even if Romney got Florida's 29 votes he would still fall short.

Well, I guess Republicans have to find some new issues to reach to bigger crowd. Bible/Pro-life/Gun/Anti-immigration -- these issues are not enough to win an election in today's US of A.

Who thought Same-sex marriage/Legalized Marijuana- issues like these will gain support in the land of Rush Limbugh or Sarah $$ Palin?

Thats exactly how Obama got re-elected. Because he got votes from the Ispanics, Blacks and the Asians.

Interms of gender, 48% of the woman voted for Obama. This is due to some loose talks made by some of the Republicans regarding the Legitimate Rape. This surely hurt the women.

As far as Fox news is concerned, it has never been Fair & Balanced as they claim to be. All of their opinions and views about all aspects of the political world are one sided. In other words, they are always biased.

They always criticize Obama and are never open minded. And Bill O Riely is one of the biggest entertainer rather than a good news anchor or a journalist. He has always been sceptical about Obama's Foreign Policy and his handling of the economy.

To me, they are far Right-Wing media group that will always support the Republicans no matter if they are wrong. Even though we all knew that the war in Iraq was a wrong choice, still this media praised Bush Administration for taking this step.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/secission-petitions-filed-20-states-190210006.html

..Secession petitions filed in 20 states
..By Mike Krumboltz, Yahoo! News
Mike Krumboltz

In the wake of last week's presidential election, thousands of Americans have signed petitions seeking permission for their states to peacefully secede from the United States. The petitions were filed on We the People, a government website.

States with citizens filing include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Oddly, folks from Georgia have filed twice. Even stranger, several of the petitions come from states that went for President Barack Obama.

The petitions are short and to the point. For example, a petition from the Volunteer State reads: "Peacefully grant the State of Tennessee to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government." Of all the petitions, Texas has the most signatures so far, with more than 23,000.

Is it just an exagerrated news from yahoo or is it really happening in the US. I just came across a news titled 'Secession petitions filed in 20 states'. I was asthonished to see the disunity amongst the Americans who voted for Romney. Shocked It seems as though they cannot accept the fact that Obama has won the election.

Now all the states that are traditionally Republicans stronghold are going for this radical move. I don't know how accurate it is. But I hope that the US congress don't accept this.

Correction, Obama got 55% of the women vote. Obama lost the white vote by 20 points, 59% to 39%, but still won the election as whites are shrinking in numbers and white voters in this election was just 67%.

Obama won 53% of the popular vote. Romney won 47%.

How's that for some irony?
