easyJet wants pre-1990 planes grounded

easyJet is calling on the European Union to ban 678 aircraft that it claims are ‘too dirty to fly’.
It wants any aircraft built before 1990 to be banned from operating within the EU after 1 January 2012, the date when the EU Emissions Trading Scheme will be extended to aviation.
In a statement easyJet said that in the 1970s and 1980s the aviation industry was incentivised to reduce noise emissions from aircraft through the prohibition of the noisiest aircraft types. As a result, today’s aircraft are typically 75% quieter than those used in the 1960s.
The airline claims it is now time to apply the same logic to carbon dioxide emissions, as ‘it is an unavoidable fact that the oldest aircraft are the least fuel-efficient and, therefore, the most environmentally damaging’.
According to figures from Airbus, a 1980s-vintage MD82 aircraft generates 21% more CO2 per seat than an A319 in an equivalent seating configuration, while easyJet’s own data shows the A319 to be 15% more efficient per seat than the Boeing 737-300. Boeing said recently that its new 787-9 Dreamliner will burn 27% less fuel per passenger than the older A340-300s that it could replace in some airlines’ fleets.
easyJet wants the EU to introduce immediately a regulation banning all passenger and freight aircraft built before 1 January 1990 from the EU register from 1 January 2012, with the requirement rolling forward each year. The airline said it believed five years to be the shortest practical timescale for airlines to comply with such a regulation.
