China Eastern Airlines has started the first-ever direct service between China and South Africa with the launch of a Shanghai and Johannesburg service on April 27, says a UNI report.
The Shanghai to Johannesburg flight MU213 will be operated with an Airbus A340-300 each Tuesday and Friday with a one-hour stop in the Maldives.
This flight will depart Shanghai Pudong at 23:55 , and arrive at the Maldives at 04:55 the next day, then depart Maldives at 06:05 and land in Johannesburg at 10:15.
The return flight MU214 will depart Johannesburg at 14:05, and arrive in the Maldives at 00:50 the next day, then depart the Maldives at 02:00 and land in Shanghai Pudong at 12:20.
This flight will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays (local time).

This flight raised objections from India, as the Defence Minstry was not too happy with a Chinese airline flying over India for too long. The flight will now exit over Maharashtra and over the Arabian Sea to Maldives.

I don’t see how they can seriously object. If it's a civilian over flight, then we can’t really throw a fuss without opening a can of worms.

Well yes we can object, but I still think we can’t do it without opening a can of worms.

Are you saying the Chinese wouldn’t let us fly through their airspace to get to Japan?
The only incident I can remember is that we didn’t allow PIA to over fly us a couple of years ago during the period of increased tensions between our countries.

Didn’t or doesn’t the Paris/Warsaw/Chicago/convention or ICAO deal with this sort of thing? Way back before ICAO I believe it was the 1919 Paris Convention the signatories basically said that the ‘area’ above a country was its sovereign airspace and that they must let their airspace be used for innocent civilian over flight or something like that? I know my wording is wrong and that newer treaties have come into effect, but do you know what the other treaties say?

Obviously like you said, worst comes to worse it’s our airspace and we can restrict who we want. But because it’s an Air China air carrier operation it makes our stance harder to backup.
Just because we can do something doesnt mean we should. If there is a genuine threat that's a different matter, but this isnt the same scenario as with Pakistan 5 years ago.
