Air-India (A-I) chairman and managing director Vasudevan Thulasidas and Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal have a common agenda: to get their airlines among Asia's top five by 2010 in terms of size and service.
Now in the throes of mega-mergers --- Air-India with Indian and Jet Airways with Air Sahara --- that ambition is likely to put them on a collision course.

Personally in terms of Mx.AI-IC have the Equipment & Infrastructure unlike 9W-S2.
Their drawback would be the Employee Attitute.

I think Jet is now going to come in a league of its own, with its new international offering. Assuming 9W and AI have equal conditions (ie no govt favors to either), 9W should emerge as India's main airline in the not too distant future. Some of you may argue that AI is already ahead in terms of the fact that it has established itself in many destinations, but then again AI doesnt fly to too many destinations and I am guessing a large part of the high yield traffic atleast will shift towards 9W due to the better offering and service.
Does 9W need to join an alliance???
Well logic would say yes. But I think their current model of being in bed with everyone is not too bad. However to be successful they have to expand really really quick and in some respects also become a non O and D airline, ie carry transfer pax. Yes thats going to be hard in the current scenario, but not too bad if you consider that HIAL and BIAL should be online by next year and DIAL and MIAL hopefully by 2010. And can they grow fast and be successful. Time will tell.

With apologies to Thulasidas, the GOI and its surly staff, stating over and over again that "We are going to be the best" is best suited for a Saturday Night Live skit.
I have had good experiences with AI-IC on many flights, but my experiences on Jet have always been topnotch. Jet delivers what it promises, and delivers it without a hitch. It is a professional airline to the core. I've had delays on Jet Airways, but when a flight is delayed, the staff constantly keep you apprised of any information they have, and they are on top of things. In contrast, AI-IC has your basic desi "chalta hai" attitude. Even their premium cabin staff have no clue whats going on, and often don't care.
Perhaps AI-IC may emerge as an excellent carrier, but they have to cross hurdles in staff attitude, training, professionalism that Jet never had to contend with. The airline was established as a professionally run carrier and is ruthless with staff who don't fall in line with their corporate culture. |
