hi to all,
I would be taking the AA flight frm ORD-DEL in first week of may and am thinking of getting a 32" LCD TV to DEL for my parents. I'm getting it at a bargain priice of 450$.so was thinking if it's practical to bring it with me. Will AA charge any special handling fees or overwieght fees for it ( it weighs 30 KGs). Also will I face any problem in DEL frm the customs. I haven't bought the TV yet, so all depands on ur responses.
Thanks.

In the US we use a format called NTSC while India use PAL... Unless the TV your buying can work on both spectrum, its not worth the hassle..

the issue here would be converting signal from PAL to NTSC....not otherwise...Tata Sky should be PAL..

The airline would be entitled to place a fragile sticker as well as get the passenger to sign a waiver in case the baggage got damaged in such a case. In addition, it would need to be packed in such a way that even if it did get damaged it would not impact other baggage.

Baggage insurance may or may not be possible for a television carried in personal baggage. Probably better to book it as cargo, and take your chances with import formaliities as well as tech issues.

i am thinking of using the original packing to transport it and i will check it in (taking only 1 more bag) tht's why i want to ask tht will they charge any special fees or overweight fees as it weighs 30 kg with the box.

also since it costs 450$ will any custom officer harrass me as it is under RS 25,000 limit. thnx a lot

I would suggest you check their website for their oversized baggage policies, most american airlines have the rules clearly listed on their website. Or call their call center to get accurate info.

Regarding customs in India, they'll almost certainly harass you as they assess the value based on the "normal market rate", and not the "discounted rate you bought it at". Plus a 32" TV is very visible and conspicuous.

About customs, you will definitely have to pay duty for that (you may end up paying double the price) keep your bill to show them if they overestimate.

Hi B77

I have this trend has started again 20 years back people used to lug Sony and pansonic CRT TVS as India did not have color TV manufacturing.

As I am in Singapore now I see a lot of people carrying 32 inch TV back home as it is quite cheap here about SGD 1100 (INR 32,000). The 32 inch weighs about 15 to 20 KG so if you cross your limit you may have to pay excess baggage....

Customs it all depends on the officer sometimes they harrass you for no reason typically they would pick on the blue collar workers as they can bully them....but as suggested by the other members in the forum better carry your receipt with you....My friends who took 32 inch TV did not face any problems the custom guy let him go through, of course he did not have any other electronic items and he told the customs that that he had used the set….so suggest let there be a layer of dust on your TV so it looks a bit used…..

I would suggest to read ur TV manual wether it supports both NTSC and PAL boradcasting system typically all LCD TV's are multi system including Secam and what not hence should not be a problem....I remember my Sony tv which I brought way back in 1982 itself was multisystem.

The other thing to remember is in the USA they use 110V electricity hence make sure your TV supports dual voltage 110-240V.

Since you fear customs, i think you should read....http://www.cbec.gov.in/cae1-english.htm

Baggage Rules http://www.cbec.gov.in/customs/cs-act/formatted-htmls/cs-rulef.htm

FAQ on http://www.cbec.gov.in/faq.htm

Customs harassing is baseless. I find it funny though that people (Indians only) leave no stone unturned in depicting how sordid state of affairs their country is in).

Airline will charge you extra baggage. Unless you are entitled to more baggage if ur flying business/first Wink

Please ensure that you have a wooden casing packed over and above the existing packaging of your tv. Even though there is a FRAGILE sticker, it does not guarantee you intact(ness) of your baggage.

LCD TV,s for sony and samsung are being manufactured by an exporter in Delhi its wise to contact them directly rather than going through the hassle of getting one all the way from states...

thnx for all ur replies. I really apreciate ur kindness. I have finally decided not to take the TV as AA is charging 100$ for oversize baggage. so the cost advantage really negates.

Pls. elaborate on the details of the exporter I wud be interested in buying the TV if it costs the same as in USA.

thnx a lot guyz.
