BA apologises for delay

http://www.ndtv.com/convergence/ndtv/story.aspx?id=NEWEN20070008817

British Airways has issued a statement apologising to its passengers for the delay of over 10 hours.

The airlines said: "We apologise to all our passengers for the delay on BA 142 from Delhi to London Heathrow. The flight was delayed in Delhi to ensure that the flight and cabin crew complied with safety regulations governing crew rest.

Pilot told that he had lack of sleep it seems ,the other night.Thats why he could'nt fly to LHR.Well after all the difficulties he has caused for the pax,BA will make sure he'll get some sleep with a three day suspension i guess. Laughing

i know many of you seem sceptical, but this is not entirely unheard of. It has happened where crews have fallen ill. Im sure the pilot had reasons he was unable to rest properly and if that is the case then i fully back the decision not to fly. Saftey is first and the fundamental rule in OPS, be it Flight or Ground Ops.

Standby crews are not positioned for every station that an airline flies to. Depends on how the crew are rotated on the flight. If its the case where the crew of the next inbound flight cannot volunteer to relieve the ill pilot, A delay is inevitable. Importantly however for BA they fly 3 pilots and not 2 like us.

Let's not jump to blame him shall we.

The newspapers are saying the entire crew didn’t get much sleep and they are taking it up with the hotel.
If that is the case, and the crew didn’t receive adequate rest then they made the right call to not fly.
The rest requirements in other countries are more sensible (I feel) than what the Indian authorities are trying to do.

infact.. i think this could well be true, although i dont know where BA puts their crew up, but when one of our trainers was accomodated in the luxurious UPPAL ORCHID hotel in DEL, she often complained that at night the hotel used to rent out their facilities and grounds/halls for marriage events and as a result there would be non stop commotion all through the night right upto 3 in the morning with trademark thumping Bhangra music played by the DJs at the event.

I mean it is really possible, and hence i say this from first hand experience.. it could be possible with the BA crew incident.

To me it looks like another version of Ghosts in a hotel Laughing
Seems like another way of getting their hotels changed... any idea which hotel are the crew members staying and how old has the contract been already?

My sis flew BA on Sunday morning, and the flight left bang on time. This is despite arriving 45 minutes late!! This is a positive trend for BA!

There was a 30 mins show about crew rest on NDTV a few months ago which I watched. Not sure what it was called, but it mentioned that AI wanted to lower the amount of rest time their crew got between flights. I don’t remember what it was, but it sounded low.
(They gave comparisons between AI, BA, SQ and some other airlines. sorry I can’t remember the details)
