INTRODUCTION
As we were still waiting for our clearance to move to Colombo, we decided to go on one last trip in India. This time, we decided to go to Puri, in the state of Orrisa, on the South-Eastern coast of India. As usual, there were many options to get there, as this was a Trier II city in India. The cheapest option was a 1 stop flight on IndiGo. But as we had a lot of Jet Privilege miles, we decided to go in Jet Airways Konnect. Dad bought himself a full ticket, while Mum and I got the only 2 reward tickets on that flight. Mum wanted to go to Kolkata for a wedding. So, she had her own tickets from Bhubaneshwar to Kolkata, and Kolkata to Mumbai, all on Jet Airways. Little did I know this trip was going to change the way I lived (read further..)
The out-bound flight was to be operated by a 73H. I didn’t really trust the Jet Airways website, because of my terrible luck with the information they give. I expected a standard Konnect configured aircraft. Bookings made, and just a week before departure day, I and Dad had to go for an unscheduled trip to Colombo. So, I had to go to Colombo only for a day, while dad spent a few more days. I really hoped I was in Mum’s place: considering the fact, I have the worst luck with Jet Airways 73H’s; I have never sat in one of their internationally configured 737’s. But for Mum, she had 1 sure flight on the 73H, 1 flight on a sort of sure 73H and one on the 9W ATR. That would have been a sweet trip for me! Well, I had school, so I could not enjoy my time without Mum at home. So this was a brilliant weekend getaway we planned!

PRE DEPARTURE
! I knew I would not be able to select my seats for the flight. I gave the responsibility to Dad. I told him in this manner: If the seat map has 37 rows (Konnect), then please select seat 27A for me, or if it has 33 rows (International) then seat 23A. I came back home after school (little did I know it was my last day in school in India, read further..) and called dad, and he told me that the aircraft had 33 rows, and seat 23A was mine!!! YES!!! Finally IFE!!! I knew it won’t be on because it was a Konnect flight, but I was just too excited. But then, I realized, not all 33 row configured aircraft have PTV’s!! Aircraft like VT-JGE and VT-JGF have only 1 over-head PTV for every few rows. So I just had to hope for the best.

CHECK IN, SECURITY, ETC..
The departure day was a nightmare: THUNDER SHOWERS IN THE MORNING. We arrived at the airport, well in time for the 0855 departure, but the boarding passes said that the departure was delayed by half an hour. Well not bad, considering the place where we got to sit: No, it was not the swanky new Terminal 1C. But, it was one corner of the departure gates, the Café’ Coffee day, with a nice view of the tarmac.

VT-JGV off to New Delhi, buses of the aircraft..

VT-JGA most likely preparing for a low-cost service..

The aircraft which Dad hates; Colombo Aircraft, VT-JBT.

VT-SIZ making its arrival..

Jet Airways, Jet Airways Konnect and Jetlite!!

Golf Victor is off!

Stairs out, ready for pushback

Winglets!!! Also, its a pretty dirty aircraft!

Water cannon has arrived..

The old Jet Airways colours...how rare are they now?!

You've got to love that jet blast!

GE-90's!! (Cloud's don't look too promising, do they?!)

VT-JGH doing 9W-202 CCU-BOM-PNQ.

We then got to know why our flight was delayed: Departures were on full swing to the top priority destinations like Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, etc. As we waited, I took a lot of photos of the aircraft on the tarmac.

BOARDING
At around 0920, we kept on waiting, saw a few international departures (EK 77W included) and then, finally, boarding was announced from Gate 16, and boy was there a load of passengers boarding! 96 was the one SEQ no. I saw. As we boarded the bus some person pushed me really hardly, and made me fall into the bus! How rude! Mum gave him a piece of her mind while Dad met with one of his old friends, who also headed for Bhubaneshwar. Brilliant! Then, as we took our seats in the bus, all I could see was VT-JGH to Pune, VT-JBT, a few Jetlite, IndiGo, Go Air, AI, IT and one lonely Jet Airways 738 with an old livered winglet. I then instantly remembered the registration as VT-JBR, which has a slight history, it had an incident while push back for a flight to Muscat: its winglet made contact with a Kingfisher A321 vertical stabilizer. It was the only 9W 73H around. Well, anyways, to make things worse, it started raining heavily. And to make things much worse, our bus was racing with the van where the Captain and First Officer were seated, having a short sprint to the aircraft. I was certain for more delays due to weather, and operational reasons. The bus was very helpfully parked right next to the boarding stairs, so that the passengers don’t get drenched!! That was good! Well, as I entered the aircraft, I saw a screen on the galley which had two options: Domestic and International. I think it was something to do with all the PTV settings they do: like setting our destination, so that we get to know the local time, distance, time for the flight etc. Entering the main cabin, the FA/s greeted us. The Premiere class seats were way different from the Konnect Select seats, but Economy was not much of a difference: a head rest, and obviously the PTV’s. I made my way to the middle of the cabin, and I could not believe what I saw: the extremely rude person who pushed me sitting in seat 23A! I told myself that this was not going to happen, and I am going to get my seat back! I told him: ‘My seat is 23A, please move!’ He told me: ‘Show your boarding pass.’ What the hell, that was strange!! I showed it and he said: ‘It is 23A, sit down there (pointing at the aisle seat) I called the F/A. I told him what was happening, and he asked the person to move and sit at the aisle seat. Apparently, his seat number was 23C. Ugh. Well, problem solved, and the middle seat was left empty. I buckled up for my first flight on Jet Airways Konnect!

Tarmac view..

DEPARTURE
The safety demo was shown on the PTV, with the CFM56’s being started. Well, I expected the PTV’s to be switched off, but that did not happen: the white screen showed: ‘Loading, Please wait’. And then, the TV Screen said: Please touch the screen to start. I did that, and Jet Screen was working on a Konnect flight! Well, there weren’t any head phones, as this was a no-frills flight, but no problem; I wanted to enjoy a morning flight, taking lots of photographs. After a taxi to Runway 27 (seeing may AI wide bodies around), we took off and had a shaky climb due to the terrible weather.

(From Dad's camera)

All set to go!

Aren't they supposed to show that at the end? Oh, well..

INFLIGHT
As we reached our cruising altitude, bright sunshine went through the cabin. Before the food sale started, the F/A’s distributed a few booklets, about the products in the onboard auction, something inspired by Air Sahara, a long ago. There were many good options, but what I really wanted, was the Black Berry phone. I knew that I would not be getting it that day, so no point thinking about it.

Goodbye rains and clouds, Hello Sunshine!

That winglet it sheer beauty!

There is an over-flying plane!!

Even Dad got it!! Very Happy

Out-of-focus cabin Evil or Very Mad

That haze Crying or Very sad

These set of controls are WAY different from JBT.

Back into clouds, wasn't shaky, though!

And now, Jet Airways's IFE on the Boeing 737, JetScreen:

Enough of burning your eyes on TV, get some sunshine now!! Razz

Food service started, with a relatively empty trolley (indeed, these had only the things the Jet Café’ menu had, which I must say, was a very small variety). I asked for the Non-Vegetarian meal (a complete meal), which unfortunately was not there. I then asked for a Non-Vegetarian combo (chicken sandwich, a brownie and a juice), which also was not there. I then tried my luck with the Chicken Sandwich and a Fanta, which was there!! I had my ‘meal’ and half way through the flight, just before the F/A’s started to clear everything.

LCC meal, a massive steal!

I then saw the passenger in seat 22A do a very smart thing: see a Hindi movie with the English subtitles, and no sound. I did the same by watching Lagey Raho Munna Bhai.

But then I felt it was no use watching a movie without any sound. Boring! I switched on my iPod, and I followed the air show.

Cannot listen to Death Magnetic on JetScreen? No problem! (It is the first Metallica CD I bought with my own money anyway, I'm glad its there on 9W, because Air France doesn't)

The captain came over the PA to give us the details of our flight. He mentioned our cruise height was 32000 feet. He also apologized for the delays.

The whole interior looks shabby because of these dreadful ads! Evil or Very Mad

DESCENT AND ARRIVAL
Decent started a few minutes later, and the PTV’s were switched off. We made a smooth approach and landed at Bhubaneshwar, about 1 and half hours late.

Yup, we are slowing down!

\m/

Where are all those dark loads of clouds?!

Mahanadi?

Yup, that is low Smile

Ah, the reflection!!!

Closing in!!!

No more TV. Now, its unknown when I'll ever get to fly on an Internationally configured Jet Airways Boeing 737.

Final approach Smile

Flaps...

More flaps....maybe time for video now?

Landing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ078blXZ3w

We made a quick exit from the runway, and stopped alongside (well not exactly) a 9W 73G, VT-JNS. I then took a few risky photos of the 2 aircraft in the airport. The sun directly hit me, in a bad way, and it triggered something terrible (read further).

Interior of the 73H: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6I6YbYsQlA

So, long, Bravo Romeo! Thank's for the sound less entertainment Smile

Not too much activity going on...also note the 'ETOPS' marking..

Yes, I know that lonely feeling bro, happens to me at home also!

At the arrivals, baggage took forever to arrive, so we tried our luck at the AVA counters. This is the place where 2 airlines which include Jet Airways and its subsidiary Jetlite (on board shopping-Jet Shoppe’) and Air India (Sky Bazaar [Bazaar is market in Hindi]) have its products on sale. So we bought a suitcase with wheels that rotated 360 degrees, a Swiss Military bag, a Foot Massager, a set of Reebok Aviator glasses for me, and a wrist watch. We needed an extra trolley for all this! We then went to my Dad’s cousin’s house, which is right near the runway!

THE 'WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?' STAY
The delay enabled me to web check-in for my next flight. This was the normal Konnect configured aircraft. A few minutes later, I selected a seat for my Mum’s flight to Kolkata, a seat right next to the ATR propellers! We had lunch, but I had completely lost my appetite! We then headed for the 1 and a half hour drive to Puri, the coastal region. We spent the evening there, going to the big Sri Jagganath temple, etc. On the way back, my head was paining terribly, and I was shivering. I knew something was terribly wrong! We came back home, and I crashed on the bed, and I had just enough energy to sit and have dinner.

EVERYTHING UNTIL I BOARDED
The next morning (departure day) I did not feel good at all. I skipped breakfast, had a small lunch, and headed for the airport. Bhubaneshwar Airport is small and old. But just like BOM, CCU and MAA, Bhubaneshwar is also getting a swanky new terminal! As I waited in the check-in line, the world was spinning terribly! I knew and my parents knew by now, something was terribly wrong with me. As an agent in the Jet Airways counter said ‘Wheelchair, 2 passengers, 9W-2584’. He spoke really slowly. Disorientation had surrounded me. I felt terribly sick, and I rushed to the washroom. I threw up a lot of stuff. Despite being so badly sick, I had just realized that I had thrown up for the first time in 3 and half years! Never have I thrown up before any flight, NEVER! I then somehow managed to wash my face, and my father arranged someone to escort me. I walked really slowly. The world kept spinning in front of me. Everything was blurred. Everyone talked really slowly. The agent helped me to go through security, so I got to jump the queue. I could not stand for a long time. I then saw the tarmac was completely empty, but the terminal had many people! As I kept my eyes closed, dad told me an Air India A319 (VT-SCM) had arrived. A few minutes later VT-JCK, which was mums aircraft had also arrived. And finally, with yet another set of delays, VT-JNL, an old winglet-less Boeing 737-800 had arrived from Mumbai. I said a very broken good-bye to Mum, even if it was 4 days; I knew I was going to struggle with my terrible condition. The terminal started to get empty as the flight to CCU departed, and boarding for the DEL flight had started. When our flight was announced, I waited till everyone boarded. As I was getting into the bus, the AI 319 departed.

JET AIRWAYS KONNECT FLIGHT 9W-2062 BHUBANESHWAR-MUMBAI 31ST JULY 2011

FLIGHT DETAILS
Airline: Jet Airways Konnect (9W/JAI)

Seat: 15F, Economy.
Scheduled departure: ?
Scheduled Arrival: ?
Loads (Actual) J and Y = 100%

BOARDING AND DEPARTURE
The bus took us to the very old looking 738. I slowly made my way to the boarding stairs. As I got entered the aircraft, it was the same set of crews welcoming us onboard as the previous day! I also felt uneasy when I saw the WHOLE flight was full. Every one of the 170 seats was used. A Kingfisher A319 had also arrived. BBI looked busy, considering it was a small airport! The 2 passengers sitting beside me went through a very interesting conversation: ‘When we came here a few days back, the flight was good, and we had TV’s in there!’ Well, I really didn’t want to enter the conversation, but I wanted to tell them that a TV-less aircraft comes only on Sunday’s. We made a short taxi to runway 14, and after using most of the runway, we were air borne and on our way to Mumbai. I then dozed off.

Start up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFwQgW849JE
Take off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeuQEMN04Vc

INFLIGHT
After takeoff, they must have started the service, but I didn’t bother. When I woke up, I called the F/A, who had a glass of water in his hand, I requested him to get me a 7 UP, even though service was over. He got the can within a few minutes.

DESCENT AND ARRIVAL
. Another short siesta for me, I felt the aircraft drop. Descent had started, and I felt relief that I was near home. We went through a lot of nasty looking clouds, as it was raining quite heavily. The pilots did a great job of getting the aircraft down smoothly, and without bumps on approach. As we exited the runway, for some reason we waited on the taxiway, and as I looked at the slats on the wing, I realized: THE FLAPS HAD NOT BEEN RETRACTED! We kept on waiting, until we made a steep turn, and we taxied into gate A4!! This was my first (and probably only) arrival at the new Terminal 1C at Mumbai! Just as all doors were disarmed, everybody on the ground went straight into action: the food truck suggested the next flight was going to be a full-fare service. Anyways, I slowly made my way out of the aircraft, with Dad being the only person behind me. I also saw the crew for the next flight waiting to prepare the aircraft. Dad also took a few photographs of the aircraft. I could not enjoy my first visit to Terminal 1C, as everything was devastated in and around me. We took our bags, and FINALLY (even if I was away for just above 24 hours) I was at home, and I had never missed it so much!

Out of focused Konnect Select..

I hope this was my last flight on a 9W winglet-less 738..

NJ and NL!! Siblings meet!!

Probably my last flight of 2011, good bye, NL!!

People, I am sorry I didn't get enough pictures from the second flight. I promised you many, but I was simply too dizzy to be awake or to take pictures. Everytime I moved, I thought I'd faint. And also apologies for jumping through in the second flight. I simply didn't have enough data!

Since I started following Formula One in 2007, this was the first race I simply didn't care about. Usually, I have rituals for good luck, I simply didn't care about it! Although it was a good race, I still don't know what exactly happened in the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix. After continuous vomiting, immense dizziness, I had to figure out what was wrong. Sadly, it was probably the worst decision me and Dad had ever made. It was a mistake by waiting for Mum to come back from Kolkata. I cannot apologize more, because I had completely wrecked all her fun in CCU. She came back on 4th August (HER BIRTHDAY...WHY?!?!), on VT-JBC. She also mentioned an incident onboard, which included the crew searching for a Doctor onboard, getting the plane down as an emergency and an ambulance waiting on the tarmac. Anyways, back to my situation, I had lost appetite, lost 3 kilos in a week (the only positive thing Razz ) and a hell of a lot of trouble. Sleepless and shivery nights didn't help. I was admitted in hospital after a long and unnecessary wait. I was diagnosed with typhoid and another disease, which even the doctors, as of today, don't know what happened. This meant that my Vada Pav quota had been cut from 2 VP's a week to 1 VP a month. Outside food is at the lowest in my entire life. Let me be honest, being a Bengali, I am a foody! How can I survive without outside food?! The transfer to Colombo was in a big big jeopardy now. My disease and NO clearance from the Sri Lankan Government, everything was grinded to a halt. By now, I had missed over the half of 9th standard. This was the lowest I had ever been in my entire life. A deep depression, bad for a school going boy to be honest! So the biggest shock for me was the cut down of outside food, I'm not used to it! Although, I'm still allowed airline food! Now I'd rather stop, that's basically my life at that point of time, IT WAS HORRIBLE!!

Now back to the airline topic: The Verdict.
Just like Jetlite, there wasn't anything too special about these two flights, other than the delays. Its all fine, I still didn't see the horrific side of 9W-K and S2, which many people talk about. And, inconsistency. 9W-K is operated on International aircraft, while 9W is operated by the old winglet-less Konnect aircraft. I still don't get it!

Another very nice report, Jishnu.
- You touch a chord in every flier enthusiast's heart when you mention the part about finding someone in a pre-reserved seat!
- You sure are lucky to have two generations of airline enthusiasts in the family.
- The post-take-off pictures were superb, to say the least. I also liked your in-depth coverage of the IFE. Why doesn't jet advertise the fact that on their planes with it, they are the only carrier with narrow-bodies, who have AVOD.
- Two different-coloured winglets on the same plane?
- Are there any power-ports in Economy? I do not think so.
- I had visited Bhubaneshwar in Dec 2008, and found the small old terminal to be relatively well-maintained, then. The traditional cloth-work from the ceilings inside, and the Konark-wheels on the airside - I liked that. I hope the new terminal also includes these two prominent icons of the state.
Sorry to hear of your ill-health, I hope you got better soon after.
Thanks for sharing another nice report with us!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Fabulous TR, equally good pics!

You are JBJetAirways on youtube, right? I always wondered, quite like your video's too.

Thanks for going through the whole thing, Sir. Smile
-It seriously makes you angry. And one simply would NOT like to let off a fuse even before a flight, because everyone while start making faces.
-If only Dad had time to post a report on ALL his 300+ flights. It all started ever since the Boeing 737-200's were delivered brand new to IC!
-Jet surely has the best IFE on the domestic sector! The reason (I THINK) why they don't advertise is because of inconsistency in the service, like I mentioned in the end of the report. One would definitely feel bad if he boards a JN* series aircraft instead of JG* or JB* series, for a full fare service. Despite this, they are a great airline!!!
-I mentioned about the incident in the TR (boarding). It was also all over the news.
-Nope.
-I will definitely be returning to Bhubaneshwar, sooner or later! Possibly this October (BBI or IXB), but I hope they finish it ASAP!
Health is fine now, although food is a massive cut down. Exactly a year since I flew VT-JBR!

My first thought on finishing this TR was on your health - hope it was nothing serious and that you're fine now! Missing out on outdoor food is a bummer, but if that lets live normally otherwise - I guess grin and bear it is the only thing that I can say Smile.

Cool report - especially interesting were the IFE shots. The IFE looks really stunning - far better quality than either IT or AI domestic. It's a pity 9W won't extend it to the entire fleet.

Well, spending 12 dreaded days in hospital is no joke, but now I'm coming out of it, eating a bit more outside than usual.
IFE is surely a massive plus point on these 9W 73H's. It will keep me entertained on a 4 or 5 hour flight, no doubt about it! (That's only on night flights, if its the day, well, there are pictures to be taken!)
What's worse is 9W may decrease the number of aircraft with IFE.. (am I right?!) But lets see what they'll do, now that there is some profit..

Another great TR, top pics too.

That 23A guy was being an outright cheese. I would have whacked him with a handbag, but that's just me. Twisted Evil

How come the 9W logo was absent on the right winglet on the outbound?

Also good to know of your interest in music. If you've noticed my avatar is the cover of 'A Thousand Suns', one of the album options on your IFE.

Once again, thank you!

HAHAHAHAHA! Well, I take time to fire up, but when I do, people usually hate me! Hitting with a hand bag would be really extreme to be honest!

Yes, as I mentioned, JBR had an incident with an IT A321, when the pushback guy got something wrong. Result? IT plane has a damaged stabilizer, while 9W plane just had its winglet change. Starboard side winglet (I think) came with aircraft, while port side was just a spare.

Yes, I noticed that logo the instant I joined this forum! Fantastic album that one!

Regards
Jishnu.
