|
|
Dear all,
We're currently introducing some filtering mechanism to take care of "Spam" accounts being created - for instance the post a few weeks ago by a new member - that had a full-on nudity picture - which was definitely not what we want AI.net to be used for.
Hence going forward, we propose to screen member accounts being created. Here's our proposal:
Quote: |
We are facing an increasing number of spammers and have currently stopped accepting new accounts from "unknown email addresses". Only accounts from email addresses that have a public history (a search for that address on google/yahoo returns a few matches) are being created.
Your email account did not fit this criteria and hence has not been created. Please recreate an account with a more publicly known email address, and we will then let the account through.
Alternatively, please provide some way to convince the moderators that you are not a spammer or a banned member, and we can then create your account.
Your identity, name or email address will not be shared or published on the site, however the moderators will need to know it to screen and create the account.
Regards
AI.net moderators

This is the email we're sending prospective new member - after searching for their given email address on the internet. In some cases, the given email address is already on a list of "known forum spammers". - in which case it's summarily deleted. Or the email address has a public history of posting on other forums or being used on the internet - in which case the account is immediately created.
However for the ones falling in neither bucket, we're looking for them to convince the mods - the easiest would be a referral from an existing member, or whatever else they can come up with to convince the mods.
This also covers banned members - they are not allowed to create new accounts on this forum or use a proxy account to post here. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Good idea.
Is it also possible to have mandatory moderator screening for the first few (say 10) posts from a new member, before the post is made visible? This will give you guys an idea whether the new member is genuine or a spammer/advertiser.

that won't be possible....we go by what is there in person's profile....having done a couple of times can differentiate between genuine and spam. |

Maybe the new member can provide proof of Identity to the Mods, this will prevent spam & multiple accounts.

One practice which can be followed is that of ascertaining whether members really have a strong desire to promote the development of the forum by asking as to why their membership should be approved. I know this may sound funny but I'm a member of Team BHP forum and this policy has actually helped maintaining the decorum and quality of the forum. Though, certain genuine people are irked by the delay but this will surely help in improving the quality of members.
Gosh, I'm posting after so long. _________________ Nalini... The Princess of the Sky... You are a star which will continue to illuminate your own A.net-India forever... |

A small suggestion. This method was implemented by a friend of mine for a tech support forum that he runs.
Since our forum is primarily aviation related, why not have potential members fill out a questionnaire based on aviation topics?? Not DGCA CPL type question, but general ones so as to confirm that he/she is really interested in aviation and not a Spammer-in-command.
The mods can go through the answers and decide whether they are genuine or not.

I like iflytb20's idea. Even if we do not have a questionnaire, a response on why they are interested in the site and what their association with aviation is, should suffice.
BTW I think its a great initiative by the mods to maintain genuine membership. Def. keeps the site to a high standard. _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |
