India to get VVIP jets soon with armed protection
12 Jun, 2008, 1917 hrs IST, PTI

NEW DELHI: India will get delivery of its three VVIP Boeing Business Jets early next month fully armed with infra-red counter measures (IRCM) scotching speculations that there was a hitch in their delivery.

"We anticipate that the aircraft will be delivered shortly with all the equipment India desires," US Embassy officials said here on Thursday.

Asked about the status of the delivery of the aircraft which was scheduled for early June, officials said: "India has contracted with Boeing for purchase of aircrafts for its highranking officials."

"These latest technology aircrafts are the best in the world and US wants to assure India's national leadership of the best available protection in their air travel which these aircrafts will provide."

The three BBJs have been purchased at a price of over USD 937 million and would be refurbished with another USD 40 million Large Aircraft Infra-Red Counter Measures Systems AN/AAQ-24 LAIRCM to deflect any threat from incoming missiles.

According to Defence Ministry sources here, the pilots of the IAF's VVIP Squadron have already undergone training on the aircraft in US and systems have been put in place at Palam Technical Area for the operation of these business jets.

"There were minor hitches," sources said on US insistence on carrying out physical verification of the advanced protection system installed on the planes once they were operational in India.

India agrees on VVIP jet inspections by Americans
* Jets have protection features similar to US Air Force 1

NEW DELHI: India has yielded to the US pressure to allow its VVIP jets, fitted with the Special Protection Suits (SPS), for the annual inspection by American technocrats. After the inspection agreement, the first of the three Boeing business jet landed in Delhi on Saturday August 2 for a formal induction in service from August 4. The jets have similar protection features as those in the United States Air Force 1, used by the American president.

India has agreed to the jets’ inspection after six months of wrangling. Pentagon had stopped the planes delivery to insist on the US Air Force officials inspect the aircraft. The move aimed to ensure that the Indians do not tinker with the technology deployed in the SPS mounted on these aircraft. Pentagon’s concern was that the technology is also used in the US president’s aircraft and it should remain secret for the latter’s safety.

The Indian Air Force has bought the three jets for the exclusive use of the president, prime ministers and heads of countries under a Rs 93,70 million (Rs 937 crores) deal that includes Rs 2,020 million (Rs 202 crores) for the SPS technology. Even the delivery of the first aircraft was cleared by Pentagon only after a team of the US Air Force officials carried out a comprehensive inspection of the infrastructure and security at the Palam-based IAF Communication Squadron on Delhi on July 14 and 15.

The most modern, high-speed aircraft’s delivery was held up over the dispute on the end user monitoring (EUM) mechanism insisted by the Americans and opposed by the IAF on the ground that the security of the VVIPs would be compromised if the Americans deactivate any part of the system in the name of inspection.
