TAIPEI (MarketWatch) -- Boeing Co. (BA) sees big potential in Asia for its new 747-8 aircraft, Randy Tinseth, Boeing's vice president for sales, marketing and in-service support, 747 program, said Thursday.

Tinseth, who is on a marketing trip to Taipei for the latest 747 model, said the firm expects Asian demand for new planes to reach 7,900 units during the next 20 years, with the large, long-haul 747 planes accounting for 570 of the total.
"Over half of the 747 planes in service globally now are in Asia, so clearly the best market for the airplane is in Asia," he said.
There are 354 Boeing 747 planes in service in Asia. Boeing expects the region's airlines to start replacing them in 2009, when some of them will have been in use for 20 years, said Tinseth.
The first European deliveries of 747-8 aircraft, which have passenger and cargo versions, and a list price of between US$270 million to US$285 million, will be in 2009, Tinseth said.
He wouldn't comment on specific orders or potential customers, nor would he provide any forward-looking statements, saying Boeing is in a quiet period before its fourth-quarter and full-year 2006 earnings release next week.
Taiwan's largest airline by revenue, China Airlines Ltd. (2610.TW), has said it will decide this year whether to buy Boeing 747-8 or Airbus A380 aircraft to replace old planes.
"With the exception of one A330 that we'll rent this year, we have no new deliveries coming up, so we need to order new planes to meet passenger growth," said China Airlines spokesman Johnson Sun.
He declined to say how many planes the company plans to order.
Of China Airlines' fleet of 67 planes, 20 are 747 freighters and 15 are 747 passenger planes.
EVA Airways Corp. (2618.TW), Taiwan's second-largest airline by revenue, operates 15 passenger 747s and three 747 freighters.

They'll have to, as the current orders are pretty much fleet replacement. To grow you need to continously replace your fleet, which is rather difficult in case of AI. Nevertheless, they cannot ignore B748I considering A380 has hit air pocket.

It would be magnificent seeing the 748 in AI's colors (or even in ICs colors!). Here's hoping that AI order some of these a/c sooner than later!
