Hello everyone. Can anyone please clear these jumbled questions running through my mind: Question
Why do modern airliners have tail tanks incorporated in them?

And how is the fuelling procedure carried out? Are the inboard tanks filled first or the outboard tanks?

I'm not an expert on the matter, but I think they do this for weight and balance. It is probably not used on short or empty flights.

Also, they fill the outboard tanks first and then the inboard tanks. There is a fuel door in the back for the tail tank.

On Aircraft utilizing Horizontal stablizer fuel tanks, same can increase the range of the aircraft as the fuel capacity has increased. The fuel needs to be utilised from this Tail plane & difference in CG would need to be taken in account.

On wingtanks, the normal procedure is filling of Wing tanks & then center tank due structural reasons & also since most aircraft do not use suction fuel lines,if both Center tank fuel pumps are INOP,the center tank fuel would be unusable.

In case of a belly landing you would not want fuel in the center tank too.

The fuel in the center tank is consumed first by a lower pressure setting for the center tank boost pump check valve as compared to the pressure setting for the wing tank boost pumpm check valve.

Trust this helps.

yup.. Mel has more or less summed it up..

The tail tanks are normally never used for most intercontinental flights.. except for the real long distance ones. Then we do use the tail tank and the Capt will decide and tell the Ops agent how much he wants in the tanks and accordingly inform the fueling guys. He will also do the necessary trim corrections and instruct OPS accordingly for WAB.
