|
|
Hi guys:
I just applied for my LLM in aviation law in Leiden University in the Netherlands because its the stream i want to focus on and practice in, mainly because i love aviation and secondly because its virtually an untapped market in India.
Working with Airbus if infuriated me to see IC. AI. 6E. IT, etc all go through UK law firms like Clifford Chance and Norton Rose, that is all our work which we are loosing to foreign law firms.
Anyways, that being besides the point, i have talked to a few friends who have the view that aviation is not the right field to get into, because in the next 3-4 decades (yes alot of foresight here) aviation would not exist as it does today.
With increasing fuel prices, its just going to become too expensive for airlines to survive and even if they do, it will be too expensive for most people to fly.
So my question is, do you see aviation dying in the next 3-4 decades? And if so, could you please state you reasons? I am already feeling a bit nervous for all those kids gone abroad or in India training to be pilots, because while i, being a lawyer by profession can change my field of practice, being a pilot is these days become like a cricket player without the advertisements! They have to worry about what they do once their playing careers are over
Thanks in Advace

Deaphen - I don't think the aviation industry is going anywhere. Yes - prices will go up and demand might come down, but new planes will be built and older ones (less fuel efficient) will be phased out.
The world is too flat by now, and there's no other viable means of transport when you want to span large distances or cross oceans. And as with any other industry or economy, everything will be cyclical, and as the last few years was a boom in the Aviation industry, there's nothing to be surprised if the next year is slow, because the next boom will be just around the corner! _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Nitin....Aviation will never end.there will be alternate fuels available & better/faster means of transport too.
Yes cost of travel might go up & so salaries of Employees will drop too.
In Mx approval systems will take over from the existing Licencing one.

With Most Airlines following the CAR145 system of Mx.Most Mx personnell would get approvals to certify certain small jobs,& would be paid less too. There would be Licencing but not as much.As Airlines would prefer to opt for Approvals.

Dolphin, er Dephean,
The aviation field will continue, as it is a mature industry that is vital to today's international and connected worlds of finance and business.
However, the field is ripe for consolidation, bankruptcies, and other changes inherent in a business where fuel costs (very high) and labor (high) are paramount.
Thus, while the field of aviation will continue, expect big changes on the number of airlines, fees, connectivity, infrastructure issues, and other unexpected issues. I predict that in 20 years, the 787 and A350 will be seen as gas-GUZZLERS. Do not expect any sonic cruisers or concordes.
Perhaps the only thing that will be constant in the aviation field is my usual complaints over Air India, and my usual appreciation of Jet Airways. That, and me getting in trouble with the moderators. _________________ "A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx." Ronald Reagan

I doubt aviation will revert back to days where only society's elite could afford to fly. As mentioned, in 30-40 years, there is a good chance there will be alternative fuels being used. Technology will have advanced much beyond where it is now and like Tex says, the 787/350 will be old school technology.
The airline landscape will definitely change and it has already started. Fringe carriers will likely be gobbled up or disappear altogether.
I'm going to guess Air India will either be gone or privately owned. |

He's safe if he's in India - here there's no hatred towards lawyers - quite unlike the situation in the litigation crazy US... _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Haha yes i am quite aware of that Sammy
Yes Nimish, we are still respected in India, actualyl respect isnt the correct word, we are known as the loosers lol, the mindset still persists that the kid who didnt do anything in life went towards a legal career.
To an extent its pretty true, at the High court here, you have all kidns of lawyers, some coming on cycles, some in BMW's and Mercedes, quite amusing. Some just sit in the Bar room all day and drink coffee and chai and the others dont have time to think.
Acutally, off topic, my family has been in the legal sphere since 1932 and i will be the first of the family to switch from litigation to aviation law. A bit decision, but based on the fact that everyone at home goes to court all prepared, and no work happens - arbitration is the way of the future and i want to eat a slice of that cake.
Actually for anyone interested, there is a aviation law conference being held in DEL from the 21st to the 25th of this month in the Radisson hosted by Mcgill University and the AAI, sponsored by AI, Boeing, AAI , etc. I shall be there.

From a guy who was allergic to lawyers; working with them day in and day out seems to have got rid of the allergy. _________________ My Flickr photos
