14. MODERNISATION OF DELHI AND MUMBAI AIRPORTS
The International airports in Delhi and Mumbai have been restructured and are being modernised through Private sector participation. The construction of first phase of Delhi airport started in January 2007 and is likely to be completed by March 2010. The cost of first phase of development is about Rs. 8,890 crores approximately. The construction work of Mumbai airport also started in January 2007. The airport will be saturated by 2014 with capacity of 40 million passengers per annum. The cost of development is Rs. 7000 crores approximately.

15. CONSTRUCTION OF AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AT NAVI MUMBAI.

Government of India has given “in-principle” approval for the setting up of a Greenfield airport through Public Private Partnership (PPP) at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra subject to certain conditions. The Ministry has set up a Steering Committee under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Civil Aviation and comprising of officials of the State Government, Ministry of Civil Aviation, City & Industries Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO) and Airports Authority of India was set up during the year 2007 to monitor the implementation. Three meetings of the said Committee were held.

Can some show me in this MoCA PIB release on const of NAVI MUMBAI airport where is it written that the airport will be ready by a said date or if it will be ready at all ?

I am surprised there is no mention of Pune or Chakan too, in the section on non-metro airports

6. INTERNATIONAL OPERATION BY PRIVATE SCHEDULED AIRLINES ON INDIA-GULF SECTOR

The Government has decided to open the India-Gulf route to eligible private schedule carriers with effect from 1st January, 2008. Jet Airways has been permitted to operate international services to certain destinations in the Gulf region from 1st January, 2008.

Note the plural in the headlines AIRLINES AND then the muppets go on to mention Jet only. what a farce.....

Does this PIB sound like it has something new to offer, most of the so called major achievements were initiated in the NDA govt of Pratap Rudy i.e. Airports Pvt, 5yr policy for Intl travel, regulatory authority. Its now close to 4yrs of UPA rule with PP in the MoCA, can anyone highlight the achievements of Indian aviation under his rule apart from the soaring 9W ( that has gobbled Sahara, probably stuck in its throat right now ) and IT ( ditto with DN ).

There's nothing wrong with that headline. The sector IS open to all eligible airlines. There just happens to be one that is eligible at the time. It's just a "From this point forward..." statement.

Yeh know that there is only one airline thats ELIGIBLE so why term it as airlines, AND if they want to prove their impartial intent ''From this point forward...'' they could have bloody well mentioned DN/IT which has already declared its schedule for the LHR-INDIA ops in the summer of 2008. A statement in the MoCA PIB would have be assuring and make the AIRLINES in the headline sound more apt. The headline could have spoken of airlines eligible to fly Intl, instead of further narrowing it down to Middle-east.
For a individual working in aviation in India since 1989, i find anything associated with 9W with a degree of suspicion.

I think you're just trying to nitpick their statement for the sake of finding some flaw. They made a general statement that airlines eligible to fly to the Gulf will be able to do so on January 1st. They only mention Jet because they happen to be the only eligible airline at that point and will be the first to do so. Maybe if Mr. Mallya started his airline 15 years ago he could have been mentioned too.

Suppose they said "airline"? Then you'll hear people saying what about KF/DN who will be allowed later in the year which happens to be post January 1st.

Well, to make it big in India, all companies have to play a dirty political game. The TATAs did, the Birlas did, Reliance has to, even the local Bania selling odds and ends at the street corner must. Its an unfortunate reality, one that most Indians have learned to accept.

That having been said, most Indians (and non-Indians) have come to associate 9W with great service, modern planes, professionalism and value for money. Its a far cry from IC and AI.

There is no denying, that the oligarchs of India have resorted to unscrupulous means to achieve their present status and the fact that 9W has raised the bar in Inflt svc for airlines from India. But today if you note the svc of Indigo, SG and IT are comparable if not better than 9W, inspite of some being no frills.

NG thru his manipulations has constantly denied the competition access to the same rights that he has enjoyed. Aviation being more of a Intl business where the competition is across borders these policies have benefitted 9W and foreign airlines at the cost of the Indian traveller and other Indian airlines, it stinks of schadenfreud. By ensuring he does not have a credible competition he is slowly destroying the aviation sector in India.

On an avg, with a level playing field most airline businesses break even at year 3, here in India with the constant hurdles being thrown at the domestic cariers, its a case of who bleeds to death first. You have seen S2 and DN being gobbled up in the 4yrs of the UPA govt. Had it not been for IT/VM another veteran of the great Indian twist the policy to your benefit Oligarch, NG would have been ruling the roost as he did from the mid 90s till DN was formed in 2003.

As the famous saying of Bob Crandall goes ''You are as good as your nearest competition''. This attitude of NG is remniscent of the Indian princely states at a time when the British East India company was knocking on the doors of India.

Not before long you'll have the superlative service of BA, EK and SQ on BOM-DEL, MAA-BLR etc. Then we can say '' At least we have better svc, even if it costs a kings ransom''.
