Continental starts New York helicopter shuttle
NEW YORK, Dec 18 (UNI)
Stepping up the competition to to attract high-end air travellers, Continental Airlines launched a helicopter service on Monday to shuttle passengers between downtown Manhattan and its hub at Newark airport. The service, operated by US Helicopter Corp., reflects the intensifying fight for lucrative first- and business-class passengers that has largely focused on cabin comforts, including lie-flat seats, gourmet food and posh toiletries.
A seat on one of four eight-seat Sikorsky aircraft costs $159 plus security fees, pricing it well out of reach of leisure travelers but competitive with executive car services.
Bags are checked and security is cleared at the heliport. The journey, which can take an hour or more by car, takes about 20 minutes including a short bus ride between the helipad at Newark airport and the terminal. Continential provided three-year-old US Helicopter, which already operates a shuttle service between Manhattan and New York’s John F. Kennedy airport, with gate space and other airport services to allow it to expand to Newark. |
