Brussels Airlines to pull out of India, review wet-leases

19.09.2018

Brussels Airlines has announced plans to further focus on its African network and to withdraw from the Indian market as part of the network realignment. In a press release, the carrier outlined plans to redeploy the A330-200 capacity currently used for a 5x weekly service linking Brussels with Mumbai Int'l. Instead, the carrier wil increase the frequency to Banjul from 4x weekly to daily.

The Mumbai service is the Belgian carrier's only long-haul route to Asia. Brussels Airlines will continue to offer service to Mumbai via its Lufthansa Group sister carriers Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) and Swiss (LX, Zurich).

Citing economic constraints, Belgium's national carrier Brussels Airlines will cease its Mumbai sector services from January 2019, it was announced here on Wednesday.

Accordingly, on January 7 next year, Brussels Airlines will operate its last flight on the Mumbai-Brussels sector, discontinuing operations for economic reasons.

With only JFK as year round NA (IAD and YYZ I think are seasonal), this was doomed to failure. Plus you have Air Italy coming who will no doubt discount heavily. I hope Brussels leaving, helps Jet out of BOM. Sad to see a EU carrier leave. Looks like the diamond industry could not sustain a flight (which most of us already knew). That said, BOM-BRU roundtrip O&D numbers saw good growth and reached about 65K which was surprising (someone posted the exact stat on another forum).

Sad to see them go. They are a decent airline, and BRU is quite a compact airport to transit through.

I wonder why LH group doesn't want to continue the A330 wetleases.

Bringing up this topic as I recently had several family / friends travel through SN on the BOM-BRU route.

In three instances, I was told that the aircraft barely had 30 people in economy class on the journey. That talks about the business SN is doing on this route.

I used SN twice to travel to BOM and loved their service. Price was decent too. Sad to see them cancel this route.
