Wow, what a lovely multi-modal trip report!
I have been reading it in parts, and watching the lovely videos as well (which by your accounts, took quite a bit of juice on your laptop). This time, I did the videos before the reading part, just to get an idea of the sounds around, which all of us avgeeks love.
It was nice that you could manage a Meigs Field trip. I have never managed this myself, though I can associate with some of the other pictures of the city! It is a pleasure to walk through, in good weather. I can also associate with much of the areas you have written about, and clicked, at ORD. I got many pleasant memories in my mind as I went through this lovely report!
KLM really have a winner when it comes to interests of avgeeks like us.
Those details really set them apart. I wish other airlines also did so!
The exotic traffic around ORD is a spotter's delight, and you sure have delighted us with those lovely photographs! Personally, I have also felt that ORD T5 sees much less international traffic than we spotters would like it to. As compared to LHR or JFK, for instance.
The well-maintained insides, and the overall experience look quite inviting. The F&B part also looks quite decent.
Wow, a front office visit, and that too, in a rare B744D plane...magic!
We all look forward to the next part.
A century of reads in such a short times speaks volumes about how much we love what you write. Keep it up!
Cheers, Sumantra. |

As always, thank you so much for your encouragement, as always!

I usually time the video edits while it is charging. Uploading in the USA is not an issue as its done fairly quickly, however here it is a bit slow...but it is going on! That said, thank you for watching the video, I am glad you enjoyed it! The next one I would definitely recommend watching is the Air France one...once it comes up!

I had nothing to do in the hostel itself..the friend I made had left on his long journey across the states, I took the opportunity to soak in a big city after 4 months of tiny Grand Forks I loved walking there. The weather was really lovely, as well.

Gotta love KLM - definitely one of my favorite airlines now!

Agreed sir. ORD is busy simply because of the humongous number of flights UA and AA have, the domestic traffic being more than enough to make it one of the busiest airports in the world. But I wasn't complaining, ORD was pretty fun nonetheless

There's two types of 'how an airline maintains the Queen': there's KL, and then there's UA

awesome start to the trip

Thank you for the constant encouragement. It really motivates me! My next TR will be up next week, just before I head back to the USA, and extend my TR backlog

Hey all! Here is the second and final part of this two part series featuring KLM B747s from Chicago to New Delhi via Amsterdam Schiphol
You can find the video trip report from the link right here.
And the full flight trip report which is on flight-report.com
Another video I would recommend watching is the lovely take off from Amsterdam
Regards

...once again Sir, a wonderful trip report!
While I haven't been to AMS yet, I have heard a lot about the place, and as in your case, quite a bit of non-complementary things, while the views of the blue liveries is often a satisfying saving grace for us aviation enthusiasts.
KL 871 is a familiar flight number to DEL: it used to be an MD-11 route, and I really envy The Wife's parents for being aboard one of the last few MD-11 services on the route. The Wife's sister and her husband have been frequent travellers on the route, as has been her brother. This is a very popular connection from the US to India, especially for DL loyalists.
KLM's B747s are indeed wonderfully maintained. As are most of their aircraft. The food part is a bit disappointing, as have been a few times before, from what I have heard about the route.
Usual question: power-ports. Since most of KL's birds are renovated ones, I think you may have had power-ports. You were unfortunately up most of the while, so I guess you would have got your camera juiced up, MacBook Air charge replenished, and mobile phone rejuvenated, as well.
Once again, some lovely winglet shots, and KLM interior pictures.
It brought back many memories, of waiting for relatives on The Wife's side of the family at DEL T2 (yes, those days), and then coming back, admiring how violet-ish blue the livery looked in the lights.
Thank you for yet another lovely report! I look forward to you reducing your backlog once you get back to Grand Forks.
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Great pics of AMS airside, it's hard to get bored with their livery (except the 737s those are boring) but the 747/777/a330s look 😍😍
Glad the crew to DEL were great, coz otherwise it seemed like a blah flight (meals, IFE etc)
Thanks for the great TR! _________________ eP007 |

Thanks, Sumantra sir stealthpilot!!
@Sumantra sir - Now that I think about it, I would like to see more blue planes...more AMS visits perhaps?!
KL871, after its B747-400 stint last winter was down to a B777-200ER, and then a B787-9. It currently is an A330 due to the lean season. Now with Jet's tie up and flights to AMS, as well as sweet itineraries on DL, its interesting to see what will happen to KL871....
As for power ports, I was quite shocked to find out that that KLM's B747s do NOT have power ports, let alone USB ports! This was quite disappointing. Using my laptop onboard is a hinderance more often than not, especially on a long full flight. Thanks to the power bank, my phone was charged significantly, and two camera batteries always helps
KLM's livery looks stunning at night. Especially the MD11s, I would imagine! I hope to read of Mrs. SDR's accounts of her KLM flights!
Nikhil - mate, your bias kicking in LOL! Any aircraft that is not white looks awesome, B737s included I love KLM's colors. This honestly felt like one of those 'get it over with' flights, even if it was the same duration as KL612 ORD-AMS (6hr45min)....
Thanks for your comment, as always buddy!
Regards
