Poland’s LOT to link Warsaw, Delhi

WARSAW: Indian travelers to Europe will soon have more choice. Poland's state-owned LOT airline is going to link Warsaw to Delhi early next year with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
"There are a lot of Polish companies in India as well as a strong Indian business community in Poland. There has been a demand from both these groups for a long time that we fly to India. We have plans to fly to Delhi next year. The question is not if but when and the decision will be taken by the end of this year," LOT CEO Sebastian Mikosz told TOI here.
With a relatively small fleet that is at present under 50 aircraft, eastern Europe-based LOT could have either chosen Delhi or Mumbai and has opted for the former. The Polish airline, which used to fly to Delhi earlier but stopped some years ago, is relying on its Star Alliance partner — Air India — to provide good connectivity to its flyers once they are in India as well as to have a good schedule in Delhi.
As his airline's USP, Mikosz promises faster connections within Europe to people flying from Delhi to Warsaw. "The big hubs in Europe offer connecting time of one to two hours. Warsaw is a niche airport and we will provide connection (within Europe) in 40 minutes to an hour. Warsaw is just six hours' flying time from Delhi. That is going to be our key advantage," he said, while reiterating that LOT's India flights will be in "close partnership" with AI.
LOT will be latest addition to the long list of European carriers that fly to India. This includes marquee names like Lufthansa, British Airways, Swiss, Austrian, Air France-KLM, Turkish and Finnair. Star Alliance is trying to get the flight schedules of its member airlines flying into India aligned as closely with AI as possible. The idea: offer India connection to incoming passengers as well as have AI flights fly into metros at times closer to Star airlines' departures from there.
This is part of Star Alliance strategy to take on the unrelenting challenge posed by Gulf carriers.
LOT Polish Airlines will start direct flights to Delhi from Warsaw Chopin Airport in early 2016 on board Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. LOT will enter into partnership with AI for its India flights which will tremendously help the route.

Do you know where this article is from and what context it was written in?
Because if it's the Trash, then it's very likely some "journalist" asked the airlinewallah "will you consider flying to India" and was told "why not?"
And that turned into this.
We've seen it countless times, with emphatic proclamations of AA / AF / DL / ET / JJ / KQ / LX / MS / QF / SA / TK all starting flights to Calcutta tomorrow.
Dilly certainly can work for several additional airlines; I just don't think LO is one of them.

Can someone give me the names of a few Polish companies doing business in India?
And can someone tell me where the 'Large Indian Business Community' in Poland is, not counting the former kabootars running the few Indian Restaurants that may exist in Warsaw?

My first solo intl flight was on LO - way back in 1990 - DEL-WAW-FRA! I think with LO expanding (somewhat), feed from India would help them. Plus there's certainly some business traffic between Poland and India - probably met through the more expensive hubs of FRA or CDG right now, instead of saving time and money flying to WAW.

India will be granting e-tourist visas to Polish nationals, so hopefully increasing tourist influx from Poland. Also, economic and business ties between India and Poland is increasing. LOT is expanding its long haul destinations mostly to Asia(recently announced NRT, ICN and BKK), plus they will be announcing two more long haul routes by the end of this year, so DEL might be one of them, with fuel efficient B788 which is designed for long thin routes. As mentioned in the news, LOT at WAW can provide good connections to EU cities and North America. Partnership between AI and LO is also on the cards. So, LO can get feed at DEL from AI and also provide onward connections from DEL to other Indian cities and SE Asia by LOT feeding AI flights. Hence, I'll never say never and all the best to LOT and DEL.

And if it's true, then it's just one more EU carrier trying to tap into the ever growing India-US market. |

Now I don't know the market details on top of my head. However the news is absolutely true and LOT is indeed finalising plans to start WAW - DEL next year on their newer aircrafts.
LO being in star alliance will be feeding into AIs BKK and SIN flights and AI/LO are negotiating on the commercial terms and agreements. Add to this poromoting tourism in Poland and onwards USA connections, and I think at least the volume is there to sustain the flight.
Yields are a different story and LO would know better. |
