Sorry mods, but the cricket thread won't let me run a poll. So I had to do this.
So now the question. Who do you think will win this years cricket WC?
I have listed only the countries that have at least some chance of winning. I think it is safe to say that one of these eventually will win.
My money is on South Africa. They have waited too long.... _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I want South Africa to win, but somehow I feel it will be New Zealand. |

My picks for the QFs are the following 8 teams.
Australia
New Zealand
England
Sri Lanka
South Africa
India
Pakistan
Ireland
WI would struggle without the services of Bravo and Pollard and I would be surprised if they make it to the next round.
I would pick New Zealand to win the tournament. The fact that they play all the games at home, unless they face Australia in the Semis, also works in their favour.
South Africa has the best chance to finally shed their "Chokers" tag. The fact that they've never won a knock-out game works against them. |

Thing is, given this format of the WC, like the 2011 one, and unlike the 2007 one, major teams are guaranteed a spot in Quarter Finals, unless they start losing to the likes of UAE and all.
Once you're there, its 3 victories to the trophy, regardless of your form, you could have won all 5 matches headed into the QF and get KO'ed right in the QF itself, and the exact opposite is true too
This is why I continue backing India, we have a team that can deliver and over the past few years, somehow, we get it together in the knock-out matches. _________________ Causal Determinism : We are hardwired to need answers. Group B ; India 300 beat Pakistan by 76 runs.
300+76+B = 376B Indian Penal Code = Gang Rape _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I really pity Pakistan now!
They will need to win SA, Zim, Ireland and pray fervently, even to think of making it to the quarters.
Good game by the Windies! _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Don't underestimate Pakistan. They may well knock Australia out.
And to be honest, I will be surprised to see SA going beyond the quarters.
NZ are having it lucky by having all their matches on home ground. Even so, they struggled against Bangaldesh. I can see them being beaten in the first match they play on foreign soil which is, fortunately for them, the final in MCG.
Overall India looks very promising. Dhoni's leadership has been exemplary, as has the bowling and fielding. I won't be surprised if we lift the cup again. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Sri Lanka out of the tournament now.
They played pathetically today. SA was clinical. They are starting to look good, the Saffers.
Soon Sanga, Mahela, Dilshan, Thisara and maybe even Malinga will be gone. Minnow days for SL ahead?? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

The NZ look like beating SA as its home ground for them....
Aus look like having the advantage against India, unless the latter play great. _________________ Think of the Brighter side !!! |

So there ends India's campaign.
I think we have reasons to be happy overall. The bowling attack has been a revelation.
Would have prefered a tougher fight in the semi-final though. Our chaps just bottled it. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

The bowling attack has been a revelation. | Sir, I think it was more of everyone putting in their best, marshalling the limited resources we have, and a large number of people clicking together, and performing to the best of their abilities. We were definitely not the best team, in terms of current form. Ashwin slowing it up to get more turn, and adding a seam-up away-swinger; Umesh bowling quite fast; Shami upping his speed at times; Mohit with his control: all three used the bouncer relatively well (though it went a bit wrong in the semi-final); and Sir Jadeja being his usual accurate self and keeping the darts on target. The lack of extravagant swing on many grounds and a possible injury kept Bhuvi out: kudos to Dhoni and the team management as well, for putting the best 11 on the field. A very satisfying performance from the Men in Blue!

Our chaps just bottled it. | Sir, we were up against perhaps the best team in business, and the Aussies are still a grand fighting unit. While we did incredibly well, within our limited resources, we were also up against a much better team. And while we were off-colour in quite a few patches of the match, the fighting spirit was there to be seen, and appreciated. We fought back well, in spite of the barren patches, and being up against a very well-oiled unit. It is perhaps poetic justice that the best two sides will now meet in the final. On paper, the Aussies are still the best, but the Kiwis are in an extended run of incredible form!
Cheers, Sumantra. |
