Trip route:
Mangalore - Bombay
Airline – Jet Airways
Flight no. 9W 436 departing at 9:05
Date: December 16 2014
Aircraft type – Boeing 737-800
Flight duration – 1 hours 20 Minutes

Background Info:

As my in laws moved down south, Mangalore is now an additional stop when we visit India. This section of the trip report covers the Mangalore to Bombay leg. The week/day when I took this flight three major changes happened:

• Jet Airways had merged their low cost Jet lite so it was a full serviced carrier now.
• 12 cities in Karnataka got renamed including Mangalore and now it is known as Mangaluru.(This name changing disease in India never abates)
• On 14th of December Spice Jet ceased operations for a good part of the day on account of fuel companies not re-fuelling the airplanes.

So with so many exciting things happening I was looking forward to this trip. Mangalore airport serves a big catchment in south Karnataka, and most passengers need to take an hour or two road trip to reach the airport depending upon the area they live in. I had pre-booked a car to drive us down and it took almost an hour and 20 minutes to reach the airport. The airport itself is situated on a small hill so the approach to the airport is a winding mini ghat route that brings you to the terminal. Mangalore airport is a table top airport and is classified as one of the 10 most dangerous airport for takeoff and landings in India.

Approach to terminal building. (Note it is still called Mangalore Airport).

From outside the terminal looks very concrete and dated but there is plenty of greenery around the airport so makes up for the shortfall.

Basically the departure and arrival section are on the same floor adjacent to each other. (Arrival section)

The 90 second alighting notice is the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. I am sure nobody will penalize if you can’t alight in less than 90 seconds.

Outside the airport there is one small café and an ATM. Mangalore airport also allows non passengers to buy tickets and enter the terminal. This basically gives you access to a cleaner toilet and some more eating options.

Terminal areas for non-passengers and food options.

My flight details:

The terminal does not have an inline X-ray machine so one need to screen luggage first before reaching the check in counter.

As Mangalore has lots of Engineering and medical colleges my plane was half full with students going back to various parts of India for the winter break. As the students were ahead of me and talking loudly I could hear some of them were heading back to Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta and Assam. Since there was a large group ahead they took quite a while to check in as they wanted seats near one another.

Post check in I managed to check out of the terminal and found some interesting retail outlets:

• Port Snacks selling tea/coffee and other snacks
• A men’s specialty store called “Karlsburg”. I wonder who would come and shop for clothes here.
• A book store aptly name “Words Worth”
• A coffee shop by the name “Coffee Day” which had a very close resemblance to “Café Coffee Day” and if you did not pay close attention you would have got easily conned.

Security clearance on the same level, post which we had to take the escalator to level one for our gates. Since I reached the gate early the plane had yet to arrive. Soon an announcement was made that Jet Airways flight from Dubai has landed, and that was the same plane that would be taking me take me to Bombay and onward to Delhi. One peculiarity of this airport was that there was constant announcements being made whenever a plane landed and felt like I was at a major railway station than in an airport.

My aircraft with winglets.

Mangalore airport, although very small, was efficient with clean toilets, sufficient cafes, and overall very clean. This terminal even had a smoking lounge for smokers.

Soon boarding was announced and once I entered the airplane I was disappointed to note that there were no IFE especially when this plane was used on the international leg.

The mood lighting was turned on as passengers were boarding.

Seats need some scrub:

Knee Shot

Push back commenced once doors were locked and manual safety demo commenced. I have never seen a safety demo that was done so fast and furious and I wonder what was the point of doing a safety demo in a rush just for the sake of it. We aligned to active runway and we were airborne after what seemed to be a long take off roll.

Around Mangalore Airport

Mangalore Refinery

As this was a short flight snacks was being served. The meal today comprised of:

• Bottle of water
• Muffin (Which was horrible and poor quality so I did not eat)
• Black eyed beans puff which was not at all appetizing. The puff although big had less filling and the pastry was rubbery.
• One small tamarind candy

No Tea or coffee was served and trays were cleared quickly as we started to descent.

As I kept looking out of the window I saw we were over the Arabian Sea and still descending which was odd as I could see the sea waters quite clearly as typically most airplanes tend to land from the Vashi side. I later realized that we were indeed going to land from the Juhu side instead of Vashi which was a first time experience for me. I am guessing even though I landed from the opposite direction the plane still landed on runway 09-27, based on the visuals can some aviation folks enlighten me if it was indeed 09-27?

Skyline “The Smoggy City Of Bombay” & approach over Juhu beach

Flying over Juhu airfield

Touchdown with full braking and reverse thrust deployed. Upon landing and as we were taxing an announcement was made that all passengers need to disembark for their connecting flight. Once we docked and as the door was being opened an announcement was made that connecting passengers to Delhi to remain on board the airplane as the same aircraft will be headed to Delhi which bought some joy to some student travelers who were connecting passengers.

Some plane spotting at BOM

The well-organized domestic terminal

Overall I would rate 9W did a good job in taking me from point A to Point B efficiently and safety and the crew was cheerful and warm.

In terms of food, IFE and cleanliness of the plane I am going to give a low score as this is an area that 9W needs to buck up quickly as the consistency of the product is glaring and new competitors like Visatara are going to give tough competition to 9W.

As always comments/feedback welcome.

Hope 9W improves food quality soon

Srinivas, I am really happy that after your reply on Pradeep Kini's TR covering the Bajpe airport, you have treated us to a typically nice Srinivasesque TR!
pradeep777 wrote:

And if Pradeep returns the favour, it will be even better! I have always dreamt of going to Mangalore, or mangalAvuru: and visiting Bajpe of course, as I wrote in my reply to Pradeep's lovely TR covering the recent state of the airport (not negative in any sense!). Bajpe happens to be one of the five airports of Kerala, which has three in the state, and two outside Razz My count is three out of five: I am yet to check out Nedumbassery, and Bajpe Sad I have enjoyed the old terminal at TRV, the lovely table-top at Karipur, and the neat AAI airport at Peelamedu.
Srinivas: thank you for the extremely detailed pictures from inside the terminal! While it is a typical AAI airport, I do not see too many things wrong with it. Yes, AAI airports can be well-managed as well!
sri_bom wrote:

Was it also printed outside the Smoking room you have shown in a picture? Razz

Ha ha, good one!

I guess it is the same at all places except the two GMR airports at DEL and HYD, and the two GVK airports at BOM and BLR.
sri_bom wrote:

Ha ha! I too would associate the phonetically similar `Carlsberg' with something much more interesting Razz
Since he has beaten me to the reply, let me mention him! I guess Ameya's home airport also has a similar-sized outlet of the same.
sri_bom wrote:

Yes, this is specifically where Ameya Sir has beaten me to the reply. Coffee Day is the parent company, which has grown by leaps and bounds since it started in the late 1990s in Bengaluru. Some of their fare is excellent, even their pre-packaged mixes are very good. For me however, the traditional Kodagu kApI is THE best, served in traditional households in South Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Ah...that heavenly chickory blend!
Srinivas: what is this box-like structure on the seat back?
sri_bom wrote:

Ha ha, good one! Nice pun linking your disappointed mood, to no sign of it being lightened, with the old yellowish lights on this not-so-new bird!
I am actually a bit surprised to see a dirty Jet aircraft: normally, their planes are quite spic-and-span from the inside. Second, their average food quality, though still mils behind Air India, seems to have improved considerably, since it became a complete full-service carrier. Was 14 Dec (`Childrens' Day: will Jason take the bait?) an off-day for Jet, on this particular leg?
Wow, you got a runway 09 landing! Having been based at Mumbai for such a long time, I am sure you would have also experienced the rare runway 32 landings. I've experienced take-offs and landings on runways 27 and occasionally 14, but never the other two - off the top of my head. One of my greatest surprises in 2001 was seeing a Gulf Air Lockheed Tristar coming in to land on runway 32, as I glanced from the banks of the Powai lake. What a sight!
Nice spotting at Mumbai!
Among the domestic terminals, somehow I have always liked T1-A better than T1-B (of course, T1-C is an absolute delight, being seamless with T1-A). This is true for the un-renovated ones as well: but of course, a personal opinion.
Thank you once again, and now that IXE is also on your itinerary, we all look forward to many, many more TRs from you!
Cheers, Sumantra.

Surprised at the shabby interior. Usually 9W flights are quite clean inside.

Nice TR. Good insight into IXE.

Thanks Ameya for your inputs. I had no idea that CCD has a low cost arm just like airlines. I actually wanted to have a coffee but since I thought this was a copy cat I gave it a miss.

Thanks for your detailed feedback and comments as always Sumantra. If you have noticed I have tried to be a bit creative in the title, something that I am picking up from you.

Although it is a typical AAI airport I have to say they have maintained it quite well. You just need to visit the toilet of any institution and that should give you a sense of the overall affairs, since the toilet was clean the rest of the building was also.

The 90 second alighting is really funny but I am guessing typical AAI notice.

As for the store I hope some drunkard does not show up and ask for Calserberg Beer that will be really fun .

The box like thing on the seat back I don’t recollect what it is for but suspecting must be a glass holder etc. Maybe someone from the forum can enlighten us on this.

I have learnt my lesson on the CCD never knew they had a express version , but you are right nothing to beat a filter kapi…

Thanks for confirming it was runway 09 which was first time for me and I have never landed on runway 32 as most international airlines tend to avoid that. Wow I am surprised to note that Gulf Air was still flying a tri-star in 2001 as well that must have been a beauty.

Thanks Sumantra for your inputs once again.

Stumbled into your trip report as I saw the words "Mangalore" - MY HOME!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yes, the new runway 06/24 was built by filling in soil between two hills. The optical illusion that occurs during approach is why IXE is a considered to be dangerous. But by all means, safe.

Hahahaha, Karlsburg is a famous AAI store. You can find it in most Tier-II city airports run by AAI. Yes, it is a bit weird as to who would shop for clothes Laughing

That is horrifying. The seat condition looks terrible and in need of a good scrubbing.

With regards to IFE, Jet seems to not use it AT ALL for domestic legs. So, it's essentially deadweight Crying or Very sad Rolling Eyes

Besides, that's actually one-off thing that you got a IFE bird. Jet always deploys their newer BSI IFE-less birds on this route now. Too bad the IFE didn't work. Crying or Very sad

In eager anticipation, Sumantra.

Great trip report Sri. Mangalore happens to be my one of my favourite cities in India.

I had taken a flight on this sector almost 11 years back, That time 9W had served a full meal on both the sectors.

Simply loved the approach, landing and braking on the old rwy.

Thanks Himmat for your feedback and great to know you have travelled to Mangalore at some point. Eleven years is a long time and things have changed so much in aviation from there Smile

My guess is that this is one of the TRs in the bouquet you have served up. I look forward to reading all of them, this week.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Srinivas sir, great to read another TR from you, and wow this has some awesome pictures to go with it! Very Happy

Wow, alighting time 90 seconds? Does Mangalore Airport have ex-F1 pit crew members to help with such a quick process? And who's keeping an eye on the stop watch? Razz Haha
And nice pictures of IXE too, in general.

Seeing that this TR is from December 2014, I believe the plane did 9W531, followed by your flight 9W436 and then 9W307 BOM-DEL-DED. I half expected this rotation to be followed through into January 2015, but that didn't happen. I won't complain since I got 9W's newest bird VT-JTB (still remains the newest as of today!)

That sandwich....it makes me sad looking at it Sad You get that on pretty much all flights these days.

Yes, that is a runway 9 arrival. I haven't taken off or landed on runway 9 (but the opposite direction has been the most frequent for me, rwy 27)

Thanks for sharing this TR!

Regards
Jish

Thanks Rishul for your kind works. You had me in splits when you compared the 90 seconds alighting time to F1 race pit. Hey this is Incredible India anything happens here.

I did not like the sandwich too much outside crush and very little inside filling.

I loved landing on runway 9 gives you an eerie feeling as you approach over the apartments.
