^^ Fascinating numbers here - thanks for sharing.
The DEL-JFK route took me by surprise:
#1 - AI - 34/37%
#2 - EK - 13/13%
#3 - VS - 10/9%
#4 - EY - 9/9%
#5 - BA - 8/8%
#6 - QR - 6/5%
This is clearly a routing where the MEB3 do very well - plus VS has surprisingly good numbers on this route. What I found odd was that LH or AF or KL were so low on this route! TK is not even listed here.
Ojas - can we get similar numbers ex-BLR ? _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Cool - feel free to PM the raw Excel to me, and I can format that into a format suitable for this forum (probably images or using the [code ] markup on the forum). You can then post it in a much more legible form. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Would love to see BOM-EWR (UA vs AI)
I wonder if the reason VS does so well JFK-DEL is timings - if you need to go to other cities in the north (driving) arriving day time makes it easier |

Very interesting numbers. Thanks Ojas.
Going by these, all that Air India needs to do is better the service and slowly push up the yields without affecting market share. . they would then be in the right direction
My 2 cents _________________ www.networkthoughts.com |

Wow - UA seems to be rocking on this route - grabbing considerably higher market share with a 772 compared to AI on it's 77W... _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Well correct me if i'm wrong this is only O&D so someone going ewr-amd would not count in percent. Ewr is a center (read source city) of indians here doesnt surprise me that AI would have a lot of connections on Bom side also since timings were moved for a late afternoon arrival in Bom. That said i think it really shows how competitive AI 9W and UA can be. People will fly them. |

Well, it could be that UA is strictly O&D and AI carries pax to AMD, and 9W carries a number of pax to BRU. |

Not really true Jay - IMO UA would be booking many tickets from say IAD or BOS or ORD etc. via EWR - those won't appear in this count either. I know UA books quite a few pax to BLR (connecting to 9W at BOM or DEL) - so UA even have India side domestic connections (probably AI have US side domestic connections as well). _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

So remember this is % of the O&D traffic. It doesn't mean that UA or AI are not selling connections, it just means that even with getting 36% of EWR-BOM O&D you still need to sell connections to fill the plane. Hopefully UA is good at price discrimination - mixing higher yield nonstop traffic with FF that are willing to pay a bit higher for status flying a one stop and then selling to discount shops. |

I'm not really surprised by most of these numbers, or the others that Ojas has posted.
But, as many folks have pointed out, they're not all cut and dry:
- it seems only pure O&D numbers are included, so that means only people who purchased a BOM-EWR ticket, on whichever airline
- presumably, someone flying BOM-EWR-IND on a single UA ticket or someone doing GOI-BOM-BRU-EWR on Jet isn't included
- then the codeshares skew the numbers again
- plus we have weird entries such as Qantas
- same deal for the other city pairs
Our desi airlines have long been more reliant on O&D traffic and are not as connections focused as many other airlines, so it's to be expected that their share will be higher using most metrics.
Of course, both have been losing money hand over fist, so it's all hopeless in the end anyway. _________________ four years free of jetya punti! |

Qantas is in the picture thanks to the EK+QF partnership.
Oneworld Elites prefer to have tickets issued on QF stock wherein it picks up BOM - DXB on EK and DXB LHR on QF on a QF fare basis. |
